Learn some history.

Back in the day, ex-slave Frederick Douglas had a choice. He could support a full on abolition candidate who was probably going to lose, or support Abe Lincoln. Lincoln had said that he had no plans to abolish slavery. Douglas decided it was better to support the eventual winner and have a seat at the table than make a futile gesture.
