On Monday ICE agents serving an unrelated warrant profiled, detained, and then shot and killed Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian man with a Social Security number, authorization to live and work in the United States – and his partner and three-year-old daughter next to him in the car. Spontaneous protests at the site of the shooting in Biddeford, Maine have spread to cities across the US, joining calls for justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, the Houston man killed by ICE last week, and reigniting mass demands for justice in the wake of more murders at the hands of federal agents. Meanwhile the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday announced it would stop doing vehicle stops to “retrain” its agents to do so without killing. BT Live’s Zoe Alexandra and Rania Khalek on the Trump administration’s shifting anti-immigrant tactics to save face: “We know that in January, in Minnesota, after the killing of Renée Nicole Good and then the murder of Alex Pretti on the street as well, this sparked a national uprising — and that is exactly what they want to avoid.” Watch full episodes of BT Live, join breakthroughnews.org as a member today!

“If there is a return to the talks — which would make us all very lucky if there is — I suspect the Iranians will wait even longer this time around. Perhaps even until after November, to give Trump as much of a defeat in the midterm elections, to impose as much of a political cost on him as possible.” We’ve entered the Iran war doom loop, with airstrikes back on for the third time since the MoU that “ended” the conflict was signed, Trump’s blockading Iran’s ports once more, and Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed – again. The US and Iran signed the same deal and walked away with two different ideas of the post-war order. But Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, says the stakes in this war are rising, and fast: With the world’s oil inventories depleted since February and Trump’s political clock running out ahead of the November midterms, next moves on both sides will make clear whether a diplomatic off-ramp to the war still exists. Plus, Washington lost its poster boy for war crimes this week with the death of Lindsey Graham; will the senator’s departure from Trump’s ear leave a vacuum in bloodlust leadership? Surely not when the bench of warhawks is so deep on Capitol Hill. Watch full episodes of BT Live, join breakthroughnews.org as a member today!

“Just as he stood with the children of Gaza, with the wounded, with the injured, I call on the whole world to to stand with Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and demand his immediate release. It is the absolute least the world owes him." Samaher Abu Safiya, whose brother Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya has been held without charge under Israel’s Unlawful Combatants law since December 2024, says his health continues to deteriorate in Israeli prison, and urged the world to take action in solidarity with the Gaza pediatrician and work for his release. "His face, eyes, and entire body were badly bruised from the punches, he cannot breathe or talk,” Samaher described what Hussam’s lawyer reported from their last visit. “He even lost consciousness in front of his attorney and collapsed to the floor." Dr. Abu Safiya was arrested in a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, where he served as director. Israel’s supreme court rejected his appeal in June, based on classified material that was not shown to him or his legal team.

An eleventh person was just killed by immigration agents in our streets under the second Trump administration. This is a developing situation. At 8 a.m. this morning ICE shot and killed someone in their car in Biddeford, Maine. The victim has been identified as a 26-year-old man from Colombia who, according to the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition, was authorized to work in the United States. This is the latest senseless killing by Trump's immigration enforcement, following killings in Houston, Minneapolis, and elsewhere. The White House and Republican majority in congress have injected an unprecedented amount of tax dollars into ICE. With their bloated budget, Stephen Miller and Trump have pivoted ICE and DHS away from the border and into city streets – breaking into homes, smashing car windows, and illegally murdering working people on American soil.

Support our work: http://novara.media/support Buy Novara Media merch: https://shop.novaramedia.com/ The idea of a wealth tax has never been more popular in Britain, and while many have campaigned for it, none have done more to boost the demand than one man: Gary Stevenson. The former city trader first joined us on Downstream four years ago. A lot has changed since then. This week, after a bruising round of media including attacks from Piers Morgan and the Guardian, Gary sat down to give his side of the story to Novara Media’s Aaron Bastani. What are the fair critiques of a wealth tax, and how does Gary engage with them? Why does Gary claim the British middle class is facing collapse? What would he say to Andy Burnham? What does he think needs to be done, to keep out Farage and Reform? And do the recent spate of attacks in the media show that - counter to what they say - Gary’s actually winning the argument?

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot and killed by an ICE agent early Tuesday morning, July 7, as the 35-year Houston resident was on his way to pick up his construction crew for work. DHS claims Araujo, who was born in Mexico and had no criminal record, attempted to weaponize his van against federal agents, an allegation his family vehemently rejects. No video of the shooting has been released. More than a thousand people marched in Houston Wednesday to demand a full and transparent independent investigation into Araujo’s killing and compensation for his family, and for an end to ICE ambush attacks on the city. Araujo’s son Ronaldo Salgado told reporters: “He deserved to live a quiet life as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo — a husband, a father, and a job creator for dozens of men who also wanted the American dream.” Nationwide more than 10,000 people have been arrested by ICE in the last five days – a surge that has gone largely unreported as DHS has shifted tactics away from massive federal troop deployments. Where’s the outrage from Trump’s so-called “opposition” in Congress? Zoe Alexandra and Rania Khalek break down the federal government’s latest extrajudicial killing by untrained masked agents on taxpayer salaries. Many Western economists and media outlets claim that Americans are wealthier than Europeans, but this is not true; it's based on a misunderstanding of the difference between average wealth and median wealth. “I do not think the European Union will survive if they continue to run after Donald Trump, to continue to have this relationship inside NATO. I don't believe in NATO 3.0 — it’s a theft machine, it's a war machine, it's a crazy king machine.” Belgian MP and leader of the Workers’ Party of Belgium Peter Mertens joins BT Live to wrap the NATO arms fair in Ankara, the annual “ritual flattering of the king” that generated $50 billion in weapons contracts and more soundbites of European leaders bootlicking Trump than Peter can shake a stick at. But resistance across Europe is growing — and with it, political crisis — as more voters reject austerity and demand investment in public welfare not warfare. Converging crises and working-class rage: Will Europe as we know it survive the messy, violent, potentially prolonged death throes of crumbling empire? #breakthroughnews

It's been over a thousand days since Israel began its livestreamed genocide in Gaza, and global politics is still shifting as a result. Candidates who refuse AIPAC money are toppling Democratic incumbents across the US, support for Israel has become a political liability and the establishment's answer has been a full-blown red scare. Rania Khalek speaks with Palestinian novelist, poet, and activist Susan Abulhawa, author of “Mornings in Jenin,” to discuss how Palestine has become the litmus test of American politics, how AIPAC was dragged out of the shadows, and why she believes the cultural boycott and solidarity movement must stop centering Israeli feelings. She addresses Netanyahu's cynical claims about protecting Christians in Lebanon, Iran's demonstration that the empire can be defeated, and how accusations of antisemitism are weaponized to shield a state committing genocide. China has officially rolled out its new Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law. While Beijing maintains the law is a crucial step toward national integration and common prosperity, corporate media and human rights groups have been quick to sound the alarm, alleging “forced assimilation” of minority cultures, especially in Tibet and Xinjiang. Zoon Ahmed Khan, analyst and fellow at the Center for China and Globalization, joins Amanda Yee to situate the Ethnic Unity law within China’s development and poverty alleviation efforts, while also addressing critics’ accusations that the law erases minority languages and allows Beijing to target diaspora communities overseas.

“The writing is on the wall. It should be apparent at this point to the Democratic party leadership that AIPAC is toxic, that funding for Israel is deeply unpopular from among the base and that changes need to happen. Every incumbent Democrat should be paying attention to this moment right now." Trump’s spiraling about the “communist menace” as the Mamdani effect triggers tectonic shifts to the left – and away from the Democratic establishment – in New York, where State Assemblywoman and proud DSA member Claire Valdez just took the highly competitive primary for New York’s 7th Congressional District, crushing the establishment-backed candidate by more than 20 points. Valdez joined BT Live to discuss the Palestine litmus test for progressive candidates, the rise in anti-war working class consciousness, and voters’ growing demand to be represented by politicians with the courage to sanction, let alone embargo Israel: "In the same way that we sanctioned South Africa during their apartheid regime... I think we should be looking at those tools now, in this moment." What would it take for a Rep. Valdez to back Hakeem Jeffreys for House speaker? What are her demands for the Democratic primary field looking at 2028? And how will she stand up to establishment pressure and attempts to co-opt the people power behind her, as she (very likely) heads to the US Capitol come November? “Once the Lebanon war wasn’t enough, they created a new route in Hormuz.” US airstrikes on more than 170 targets in Iran starting Tuesday – day 4 of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s massive and defiant funeral procession across Iran and Iraq – and Tehran’s retaliation in the Gulf have reignited global concerns about a return to all-out war. Is this a win for Marco Rubio’s neocon camp in Washington, getting the carnage it can’t get enough of? As most of MAGA now says they want the war to end as soon as possible, will voter outrage at the gas pump push Congress to act on the war powers resolution it passed to rein in the president? Has the ceasefire actually collapsed, or is this just another Trump tantrum with a body count? Erik Sperling, executive director of Just Foreign Policy, joins BT Live as crude soars, civilians die, and the June memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran faces its greatest test yet.
