Welcome to Pet Peeves, where the little things that annoy you are welcome.

Ever notice the thousands of posts and comments out there that just grind your gears? You always want to say something about how much whatever it is sucks, and you hate it. But, then you're going off topic and get people mad at you.

Well, don't do that. Come here instead! Tell us about your pet peeve!

Rules are simple

1: Do not link to comments or posts elsewhere. This ain't power tripping bastards, we aren't here to judge users or mods, we're here to vent a little spleen about the minor annoyances of life.

2: IF screen shots are used, they must have any and all user names obscured fully, and any community names as well. Like already said, this isn't about going after anyone or anywhere in specific, it's about us having a peeve.

3: Wheaton's law is in effect. Don't be a dick. It ain't cool, and it won't be allowed to stay up. Fair warning ahead of time, mods make the call as to what is and isn't dickish. Complaining about it won't get you anywhere. If it's a misunderstanding, so be it, but the dickish comment will still be gone because if one person reads it as dickish, more probably would too. So go back and rewrite whatever it was.

4: If it isn't obvious, bigotry is inherently dickish. Doesn't matter if it's blatant or dog whistles, don't do it, you'll get immediately banned.

5: Cursing is absolutely allowed, but not cursing at people. Motherfuckers may well be annoying, but when you specify an individual as a motherfucker, that's not likely to end in a friendly way. You dig, motherfuckers?

Post guidelines

Try to remember that any pet peeve you have is likely something other beings do with no ill intent. So try to keep it about you, not them. Explain why it annoys you, rather than just ranting about other people, there's already communities for that kind of thing.

Example: Turn signals being left on. Annoying as hell, because now you don't know if they're really signaling to turn, if it's something they didn't know they did, etc, so now you have to pay extra attention instead of focusing on your own driving and navigation.

Don't just complain about how stupid the people must be, how inconsiderate. Keep the focus on the inconvenience itself.

Feel free to refer folks here when they go off topic about their peeves, that's part of why we're here :)

Currently watching an episode of Good Luck Charlie. PJ says that a girl he's dating told him that her mom used to know his dad. PJ tells his parents this and Bob says she was the last girl he dated before Amy. Amy gets upset for absolutely no accountable reason. He hasn't been talking to this woman or even thinking about her, much less doing anything romantic with her. How dare he have dated other girls before Amy. How dare he not have just waited around for her his whole life. How dare the women he dated not retroactively disappear from existence. To be fair this is Amy Duncan, the irrational drama queen. Sidenote, I'm pretty sure the actress is MAGA and currently does conservative kids shows.

People who repeat everything they say. It's a brain glitch. It's a brain glitch. Is it for emphasis? Is it for emphasis? Or were they trying to expand on it and failed? Were they trying to expand on it and failed? Is that what's happening? Is that what's happening? I think they're going to say something new and they don't. I think they're going to say something new and then they don't. It didn't need to be said twice. It didn't need to be said twice.

Particularly in film criticism. When someone uses this word, I immediately think they're unpleasable and will complain no matter what.

When they don't hear what you just said and reply to what they assumed you were going to say. Alternatively, they ask you to repeat yourself because they short circuited when you didn't say what they assumed you were going to say

How about this one, when they expect you to know what they're going to say. The subject of the sentence they want to say is at the tip of their tongue and they ask you what it is. How should I know? You haven't given me the verb and object yet and you expect me to tell you who or what did the thing when I don't know what thing they did yet

Or when they give you very vague clues to what they're looking for. I had someone ask me today what the movie about penguins is called. There are a lot of movies about penguins. Fortunately, my first guess was right (Happy Feet). And my Mom frequently asks what show I used to watch. There are lots of shows i used to watch, I'm sure there are some I don't even remember.

I am tired of hearing people say "oncoming traffic" when they are referring to cross traffic. I also just saw someone refer to traffic going the same direction on a motorway as "oncoming traffic". No! That's just called "traffic".

Is there a comic or meme or comedy sketch out there that makes fun of this common spelling error?

It really bugs me when people misspell things, it makes them look so stupid, and I'm craving a humorous way to deal with this one right now.

On a post about the new Narnia movie being delayed, someone said "now Christmas won't be ruined". Why? Was the movie going to automatically play on your TV screen on Christmas against your will, unprompted? To be fair, maybe they had family who were going to watch it and that might make it hard to avoid, but people have this attitude all the time. They complain about remakes "ruining" the original. Well, if you know that changes to the story are going to be that much of a problem for you, why are you watching it?

It is actually much easier to not watch a movie than to watch it. Watching a movie takes effort, especially in the theater. Even watching at home takes some degree of effort, you sought it out on whatever platform you watch it on and pressed play. Take some responsibility for your choices. Movies come out every week that you're not watching and they have little to no impact on your life. Most movies only impact your life if you choose for them to. I bet most people don't even know the Winnie the Pooh horror movie exists. It only impacts your life if you choose to watch it. But when some people saw that there was a Winnie the Pooh horror movie, they flipped out about it ruining the characters. It only affects you if you watch it.

I've listened to some YouTube videos that recap TV shows and that sort of thing. Sometimes they phrase events as "this would happen". Maybe I'm wrong but to me that phrasing implies either a) it happened frequently b) it was planned to happen or c) it happened at a point in the story we're not at yet. But sometimes I hear that phrasing used when it doesn't mean any of those things. Sometimes I hear the narrator shift back and forth from "this happened" to "this would happen" and back to "this happened" while recounting events in chronological order. It just sounds to me like "this would happen" should be used when jumping ahead slightly and briefly mentioning something that will happen later in the timeline, but that isn't how it's being used.

It's not even just Americans who do it. I've frequently been yelled at online about what is happening in the Untied States with people saying things like "your president" and "your government". Since they word it in a way that implies it isn't their government, they're presumably not American. I've seen other non-americans yelled at in the same way by other non-americans. And no, it's not fair for them to assume I'm American because I'm talking about American issues, because they themselves are also non-americans in conversations about American issues.

My favourite example is last summer when I expressed my sorrow about merchandise being sold for Aligator Alcatraz by saying "humanity has failed". Someone responded with "no, you failed, don't lump the rest of us in with your fuckup" and proceeded to have a long rant about how my country has failed and they will avoid my country so they're not supporting nazis or risking the nazis getting them. So it's pretty clear they weren't American, why were they assuming I was? If you're a non-american participating in discussion about American politics, why do you assume everyone else is American?

Me: a movie I saw with my cousins got two razzie nominations. Smurfs.

Other person: oh, I haven't seen that movie. Have you seen it?

Me: I just told you I saw it with my cousins

I keep seeing on Facebook that Nick from Zootopia and Eugene from Tangled are the only Disney characters to question why everyone was randomly singing. Do they do this just to get people to comment?

  1. As the comments always point out, Robert from Enchanted question the random singing before those other movies came out

  2. WHEN THE FUCK DID YOU SEE RANDOM MUSICAL NUMBERS IN ZOOTOPIA? There are no random musical numbers in either Zootopia movie. They each end with a concert in which a pop star is singing, that isn't unusual. At no point is there an inexplicable musical number and at no point does Nick ask why people are singing.

I'm also not sure about the claim that Eugene questions random singing. Who in the hell made such an incorrect meme? Did they watch a different version of Zootopia than I did? Did they base a meme on a dream they had? Did they blatantly make shit up and decide to see who nods along as if it's factual? Who are all these people clicking the like button as if this is accurate? Are they bots? Or are they people who are extremely easy to implant false memories into? I think I have met people like that. Why do people make and share these things? Is it to annoy people like me?

Your age is the number of full rotations the earth has made around the sun since your birth! The earth isn't moving slower for you because you were born on a leap day!

It drives me crazy so many people can't get such a simple thing right. My nephew is almost 2 years old. This is his second year of life (I'm not counting time in the womb). When he was less than a year old, it was his first year.

Yet so frigging often, everyone keeps saying their current age is the year they're in. No, your 30th birthday isn't the start of your 30th year, it's the end. It's so distracting when this comes up in a fantasy series where we're supposed to accept that prophecies are infallible. In the show Once Upon A Time, the Blue Fairy says Emma will come break the curse in her 28th year. NO, the year she is 28 years old isn't her 28th year, it's her 29th year! That's what it means to be n years old, n years have passed since you were born! There is a Disney Channel movie about a boy supposedly turning into a mermaid in his 13th year, but it's his 14th year. The mistake is so prominent THE FUCKING TITLE OF THE MOVIE IS WRONG!

In Big Brother, if it's past the jury stage they don't go home, they go to the jury house

In Survivor, nobody goes home until they finish filming the season

I recently watched an 8 episode show on Netflix called Million Dollar Secret, given it was filmed over 8 days I don't think anyone went home until it was finished.

Why do they all constantly refer to being eliminated from the game as going home?

Grow the f up.

No, it isn't disrespectful to the previous actor for a new actor to play the character. I'd rather new actors than cgi.

It especially shouldn't be a problem if the new work is a remake. I can see being taken aback by a character being recast within the same series, but a remake is a clean slate with a new cast. Enough with the attitude that nobody should ever play a certain character again.

Do you know that before we recorded stuff, we had centuries of actors exclusively acting on stage? And yeah, plays had and still have new casts of actors play roles that were previously played by other actors. This is normal.

They only feel validated if they believe, against all evidence, that everyone thinks the way they do

They call a movie they don't like a "flop" even if the movie is objectively a financial success

They think the vast majority of people are against transgender acceptance

They think all fans of Harry Potter are against Snape being black

They think movie studios continue to make "woke" content even when it has been nothing but bad for business. If studios were ACTUALLY losing money off "woke" content, they wouldn't be making it.

Wake the f up and accept that the majority are not as bigoted as you

You already got people whining about upcoming sequels and remakes, now you got them moaning about ones that aren't even happening. Alternatively, getting people excited about stuff that's not happening.

Okay, I can understand abbreviating it as FF and I can understand abbreviating it as F4. But FF4? what is the extra F supposed to stand for? It's like when people say ATM machine when the M already stands for machine.

That word "homework" gets on my nerves and I don't think I can fully articulate why. I guess in a way that's what a pet peeve is, when you can't quite explain why it annoys you. I think there are reasons I have yet to articulate, even to myself, but I will try to articulate it at least a bit.

They're referring to watching TV and movies as work they're being forced to do in order to watch more movies and shows. They're upset that a group of movies and shows are connected and build on one another. I think they're fundamentally viewing the MCU in a different way than I do, they're viewing each movie and show as a seperate entity while I view it as one long series. To me it sounds as silly as complaining "I want to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows but it requires me to read six other books for homework". Obviously each book in the series builds on the previous ones. Maybe watching a long franchise consisting of movies and shows isn't for everyone, if it's a problem for you to watch every entry in the series, maybe just don't watch this franchise.

I sort of get where some of these people are coming from. They want to see Marvel movies in theatres but some of the movies are connected to series they can only watch if they subscribe to Disney+, which they don't want to do. But watching movies has never been free. Even if the movies weren't connected to Disney+ shows, they're still connected to movies you have to pay to watch somehow.

Each man either shaves himself or is shaved by the barber. The barber only shaves men who don't shave themselves, who shaves the barber? Supposedly the barber can't shave himself because he only shaves men that don't shave themselves.

Well, why can't he shave himself? Only because you said he doesn't. That's not a paradox, that's just making up a set of rules that aren't logically consistent. I can make up logically inconsistent sets of rules too. All ducks have yellow feathers. This duck is all black. How is that possible when I said they all have yellow feathers? Cause it's a rule I just made up! Wow, what a paradox!

A true paradox is something like "this statement is false". If the statement is true, then it's false and if it's false, then it's true. There is no logical solution, it is a true inherent logical problem. The Barber's Paradox, on the other hand, is just making up logically contradicting rules and calling it a problem.

Apparently, image posts are broken today.

I was originally going to delete this post quickly as it's totally off topic, but a comment was made that gave me a giggle, and it deserves to be left in place ::

Even in high school, though we’re minors (unless you’re an 18+ senior), I found the phrasing odd. I say man as an adult. I said “guy” instead in high school. Maybe it’s because I’m neurodivergent and it sounded better to my autistic brain. I dunno.

My fiancé isn’t a boy, I would never say I liked a boy or was engaged to a boy. I usually say a guy or a man, especially once he finally hits age 18.

Edit: Worse in a story I read. 25M, gay, says he wants to “prey on boys”. I can assure you this was not their intention and they meant he wanted to look for men around his age, but you know how it sounds,

Example:

We gotta get #active so let's get #walking with a #purpose and remember to stay #hydrated! #manymoretags #pleasestopoctothorpeabuse #whatdidtheydotoyou

I don't know why any social media with tagging doesn't make it so tags only work when added along the bottom of posts or have a dedicated field for them (I think that's what Tumblr does?).

When I see tags every other word it makes me read the post like the memes with every other letter capitalized, "LiKe tHiS".

It sucks because I genuinely like tagging as a freeform way of organizing stuff, but a lot of social media lets people turn tags into format litter.
