‘Death in the Afternoon’ by Ernest Hemingway (analog old school book, but I’m more an advocate of reading, as a writer, and am not solely a digital reader)

Also, completed ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’ by George Orwell. What a read! Highly recommend.

Really enjoying these books!

What are you reading?

Finally finished Plato’s “Laws” a few days ago and wrapped up Anthony Bourdain’s “Typhoid Mary” tonight.

Next in the list is Bourdain’s “The Bobby Gold Stories” and thinking I may bring in some Hemingway soon. It’s been too long since I’ve read him or possibly FSF. I love “The Jazz Age”

What are you reading or what have you completed lately?

A new jailbreak has been released. It targets Kindle firmware 5.16.4 to 5.18.6. Works on blacklisted and registered mass-storage Kindles.

Allows you to mod your kindle with things like

Pardon my celebration, but adding and removing bookmarks on a page is so much easier than it has been for years! Tap to add. Tap to remove. Who would’ve thunk that a simple design pattern would take so long to implement.

I’m still reading Plato… Tough with two kids, and I’m also reading Typhoid Mary by Anthony Bourdain (RIP Tony. Love you and miss you man…)

All these years I’ve read from a Kindle I’ve never quite understood reasoning behind jailbreaking the device. Recently I looked into what DRM is and learned it is enforced by the publisher, itself, and I would think it is also based on contract agreements with author or estate, in some cases. It feels like same as music piracy in a way, but I also see the issue as I am writing this message. If you buy a book, you should be entitled to read it however you wish, however I do see the side of publisher in that you could just give the book to someone else and read it. In some ways I think this is good, and also not intended as a publisher or author, but also this is how books have been consumed for years’ prior to digital age. Book clubs, reading groups, little libraries, etc.

Discuss. I’m open to hearing more about this and views from others.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

Excellent thus far… An interesting new phase I’ve learned from book is “negative freedom” and “positive freedom,” which are both philosophical terms. In summary, negative freedom is typically what we in America refer to as freedom; obstacles are impeding our freedom and when those are clear we refer to that as freedom. Positive freedom is viewing freedom holistically without internal or external barriers.

I’ve just learned these terms and my summary may differ from those published, but I’m planning on reading more on the terms.

Updated to latest OS. Pretty cool. Enjoying some good reading since I’ve been out of commission for a bit.

What are folks thoughts on putting in personal information in for device recovery?

I’ve typically just use my first letter of name and phone number for device name.

Does anyone do anything different? What information do you include?

Also, just realized that I did put a device PIN on it, so. It sure if any information would be helpful if I lost it and it were found

I am reading ‘Prequel’ by Rachel Maddow. Great book. I came down with a terrible cold that has sidelined my ability to focus. Can’t read while not feeling well. Anyhow… I put myself back on ‘Libby waitlist’ for library loan.

In meanwhile, I figured it can’t returned if I put it into ‘Airplane-mode’; Is that right?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY ALMOST NEW YEAR!!!

I find if I choose two radically different subjects, or genres, it is less challenging and doesn’t feel overwhelming. For instance, I was reading ‘The Republic’ by Plato and ‘The Nasty Bits’ by Anthony Bourdain last time.

Now I am reading ‘Prequel’ by Rachel Maddow (non-fiction) and ‘The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store’ by James McBride (fiction).

Are you a two-timer?

Started this book and am really enjoying it thus far. It is a great follow-up, or prequel, if you will, to her podcast ‘Ultra’. Fascinating story, and a warning…
