I was walking along the road with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. - Edvard Munch

People who hate what I make hate me, too. They must think I am a demon or some kind of evil sorcerer. Those who understand what I do appreciate the determination, love, and courage it takes to find wonder and beauty in people who are considered by society to be damaged, unclean, dysfunctional, or wretched. - Joel-Peter Witkin

It happened on a Sunday when my mother was escorting my twin brother and me down the steps of the tenement where we lived. We were going to church. While walking down the hallway to the entrance of the building, we heard an incredible crash mixed with screaming and cries for help. The accident involved three cars, all with families in them. Somehow, in the confusion, I was no longer holding my mother's hand. At the place where I stood at the curb, I could see something rolling from one of the overturned cars. It stopped at the curb where I stood. It was the head of a little girl. I bent down to touch the face, to speak to it – but before I could touch it someone carried me away - Joel-Peter Witkin

“As types of pornography that were less common in the past—for example violence, this or that fetish—become more and more common and easily accessible, consumers get bored by them and need the extremity and deviance upped a notch to once again become aroused and excited," says Wright. "Few sexual acts are more extreme or deviant than incest."

"Pornography keeps pushing the boundaries—it’s been doing that for a number of decades, to now where it’s gotten to incest," she said. "Sex has alway been about the forbidden, and here it’s just about as forbidden as you can get."

Troopers: Off-duty Florence police officer shot, killed by Boone County deputies Logan MacDonald, Grace Hamilton ~3 minutes

FLORENCE, Ky. — An off-duty Florence police officer was shot and killed by Boone County Sheriff's deputies Friday night in Florence, Kentucky State Police said.

Troopers said the Critical Incident Response Team was requested to investigate after a shooting Friday around 9 p.m.

Their investigation found that the Boone County Sheriff's Office responded to "a domestic violence complaint involving shots fired."

Troopers said the deputies encountered Dustin Zink, an off-duty Florence Police Department officer, at the scene. Zink was "displaying a weapon while threatening both self-harm and harm to others," troopers said.

The deputies attempted to negotiate with Zink, but during those negotiations, he fired his gun multiple times, prompting four deputies to fire their weapons, striking Zink.

Zink was transported to St. Elizabeth HealthCare Edgewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, troopers said.

Troopers said their investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

One day after Zink was shot and killed, the Florence Police Department released a statement:

"On behalf of the entire Florence Police Department, it is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Officer Dustin Zink. Although Dustin was off duty at the time of this tragic incident, his commitment to serving others extended far beyond the uniform. He dedicated his career to protecting our community with honor, integrity and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on the fellow officers and the citizens he served.

"While we cannot comment on the circumstances of this investigation, we believe one moment does not define a person. Today, our department is grieving alongside Officer Zink's family, friends and loved ones. We ask our community to keep them, as well as the members of our department, in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time."

Prosecutors say a doctor deliberately drove his car off a cliff in a bid to kill his entire family. The doctor, his wife and two children, aged 7 and 4, survived. Dr. Dharmesh Patel was charged with three counts of attempted murder. Patel was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and mental health experts said his driving off the cliff was caused by a psychotic break. Despite objections by prosecutors, after he completed the mental health diversion program, all charges have been dismissed against the 45-year-old California radiologist and that has generated an uproar.

The Kidnap Years: The Astonishing True History of the Forgotten Kidnapping Epidemic That Shook Depression-Era America. Rules for thee and not me. That song sounds like. I heard it a long long time ago. It got layers and sometimes in the inverse. Just pulling levers to get it to work. Peaks and valleys. The exponential function to nowhere.

Edgar-winner Stout (Carolina Skeletons) makes his nonfiction debut with a thrilling account that puts the 1932 Lindbergh baby kidnapping case, billed as “the crime of the century,” in the context of the thousands of other kidnappings that occurred in the U.S. during the Prohibition and Depression eras. The kidnappers were often gangsters and bootleggers, and relatives sometimes turned to the local mob for help in freeing the victims. Even Charles Lindbergh, early in the investigation into his son’s kidnapping, asked gangsters for help. But even after Lindbergh paid the ransom, the baby’s body was found by the side of the road with a fractured skull and four years passed Richard Hauptmann was tried and executed for the crime, though he denied any involvement. Other horrific outcomes include the case of a 12-year-old California girl who was kidnapped in 1927 and whose body was returned to her parents in pieces after the ransom was paid. Some kidnappings had much better outcomes, such as that of banker August Luer, who was released unharmed after his kidnappers got tired of taking care of him. Dialogue taken from the printed news reports of the time heightens the drama. This collection of kidnapping stories anchored by the Lindbergh case will enthrall true crime fans. Agent: Deborah Hofmann, David Black Literary. (Apr.)
