The unique throwback sci-fi film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow didn't make the splash it was hoping for with audiences. In fact, we feel it's an overlooked film here at JoBlo as Chris Bumbray tries to shine a light on the alien invasion film with a retrospective video. He recommends it highly by saying, "If you haven't seen this movie, I urge you to check it out. It's a fun, old-fashioned adventure with a great score by Edward Shearmur, who never entirely became the A-list composer he should have been. It has a bouncy pace and even an early example of post-mortem casting with Laurence Olivier playing the bad guy despite having died 13 years before this came out. Give it a shot!"

However, some movies can still find audiences late in life, and perhaps that can happen with the new physical release of Sky Captain. Blu-ray.com has announced that Shout Factory will be distributing a new special 4K remastered Blu-ray this summer. Sky Captain was written and directed by Kerry Conran and stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, and Michael Gambon.The new two-disc 4K Blu-ray is due to hit retailers on May 27.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, in association with Amazon Studios, will bring to 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Fallout: Season One (2024), starring Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, and Walton Goggins. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on July 8.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, in association with Amazon Studios, will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray David Ayer's A Working Man(2025), starring Jason Statham, David Harbour, Michael Peña, Jason Flemyng, and Eve Mauro. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on June 10.

There are no special features listed on the press release.

Description: Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. But when his boss's daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.

Directed by David Ayer ("The Beekeeper", "End of Watch") from a screenplay by Ayer and Sylvester Stallone ("Rocky"), the film is produced by Chris Long, Jason Statham, John Friedberg, David Ayer, Bill Block, Kevin King Templeton.

These problems don’t even come close to the biggest issue of them all, though. For the most part, the movies that you can’t stream can be purchased in DVD or Blu-ray form if you look hard enough. But if it’s an original release from a streaming service, you may discover that there is no amount of money you can pay to get a physical copy.

Last year, Mike Flanagan, the filmmaker behind horror movies like Hush, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep, as well as series like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, revealed that Netflix actively avoids physical releases of their original properties.

“In the years I worked at Netflix, I tried very hard to get them to release my work on Blu-ray and DVD,” he said during a panel discussion. “They refused at every turn. It became clear very fast that their only priority was subs, and that they were actively hostile to the idea of physical media.” It’s up to companies like Criterion to break these movies out of streaming jail and given them a physical release. This is the only reason you can purchase hard copies of Roma, Marriage Story, and All of Us Strangers.

The problem goes far beyond a cinephile’s desire to own physical media, too. Film preservation relies on hard copies, be it film, tapes, or DVDs. Digital media is ephemeral. Licences can be revoked, files can be corrupted, and quality can be watered down for the sake of easy storage. Physical media, whether it’s sitting on your shelf at home or in the US Library of Congress, isn’t subject to the whims of an executive who has never heard of Akira Kurosawa or seen a low-budget cult film from the Czech New Wave.

Flanagan highlighted this point, saying that “while companies like Netflix pride themselves on being disruptors and have proven that they can affect great change in the industry, they sometimes fail to see the difference between disruption and damage. So much that they can find themselves, intentionally or not, doing enormous harm to the very concept of film preservation.”

The irony is that, while the idea of ‘owning’ physical media can look like a manifestation of a consumerist, materialistic society, it’s the digital realm that we have to worry about in that regard. Digital media is beholden to studios and corporations that are only concerned with the bottom line rather than the preservation of culture. In contrast, distributors like Criterion, Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, and Severin Films offer high-quality, physical restorations of movies that often include audio commentary, essays, multiple cuts, and elaborate artwork. In short, physical media treats films as enduring works of art, while streaming platforms reduce them to ‘content.’ I know which definition I want to be behind.

The steelbook collection includes six steelbooks--one for each film--plus a massive "steelbook library case" to keep them organized on your shelf. Details are scarce, but we do know you'll get 4K and digital versions of all six films. Expect to learn more about bonus features soon. Since this is the first time the films are making the jump to 4K, we expect there to be high demand for the product. Be sure to preorder if you want to be among the first to have it in their home.
