Hello! I'm currently working on a research paper for my English composition course, and we were given free reign on the topic. I decided to do my topic on the history of queerness in gaming, and I'm not only talking about queer characters, but also the gaming community too. So far, my major sources focus on things like:

  • Demographics of games with queer characters (which identities, created in what country, what year was the game made, etc.)
  • I want to try to find more stuff about trans, enby, and ace characters as I feel their representation is a little underepresented
  • Opinions of queer and non-queer gamers on queer representation in games
  • How fan interpretations, fanon, and external content (like social media posts) is important to gaming too
  • What games do right and wrong with representation, especially when it comes to "non-gendered" character creators
  • How localizations/translations are sometimes used to censor queerness. Also about how queerness can be seen differently around the world.
  • Some info on Gamergate, but that's not a major focus of the paper
  • A pinch of info about feminist gaming, but not necessarily lesbian-women-only gaming

I want to make sure I'm hitting what people find important to explain and teach to others, as the goal of this paper is to be read by anyone who's curious to learn. So if there's any topic you deem extremely important that shouldn't be missed, please tell me! Also, I'm a little more knowledgeable about JRPGs compared to popular western games, so character recommendations to bring up are appreciated greatly.

I plan to promote a survey about this stuff later on, I just need to get my questions together :). I will crosspost this to other gaming or queer communities, so you might see me there too!

This post is also on Reddit, although due to it being a new account I'm going to struggle to gain traction there with the low karma bans :(

Microsoft might be preparing to integrate Steam and other game launchers into the Xbox app. The company briefly posted a mockup image showing the new Xbox app...

I just beat the game on the easiest difficulty. That was still pretty fucking hard. The game was so fucking weird, and I mean that in a good way. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I liked it but I wasn't super impressed with the gameplay. All in all, I'd reccommend giving it a shot if you get it on sale.

Top ones I know of these days are siege, but some people have made a case that dead by daylight is pretty bad as well. Like if any of you remember the Xbox 360 Halo days. I think those would pass for toxic today. What do you guys think? Is the most toxic community out there in gaming?

Hello everyone ! I get some game codes with the Amazon Gaming thing, and some of them I already have or I can't play, so I share them with you. Please tell me in the comments/DM if a game picks your interest, and I'll send the code to you in private message, and mark it as submitted.

Hi all. My headset recently broke and I was wondering what the best headset with a mic yall would recommend for under $100? Preferably less than $70 if possible. I don’t have a ton of money to spend right now so I’m just looking for something basic to chat with my friends on discord or while playing games on Ps5, Pc, and Steam Deck. I had ordered a used pair of (Kingston Model) HyperX Cloud II’s, but they sent me the wrong model (which I’m returning) and I’ve heard nothing but bad things about the HP model. So what would you say is the most similar to that quality in 2025?

Also I don’t post much on Lemmy (or Reddit previously) so I’m sorry if this is in the wrong place—so if there is a better place to post this please let me know

Gaming chat platform Discord in early talks with banks about public listing

US group has sought to broaden its appeal to a mass audience

Discord is in early talks with banks about a public listing, according to people familiar with the matter, in a sign of a possible revival in the sluggish US IPO market.

Founded in 2015 by video game developer Jason Citron, Discord offers multi-person voice, video and text-based spaces to its 200mn global monthly active users.

The San Francisco gaming chat platform was considering listing as early as 2021, according to people familiar with the matter. However, many technology companies and investors have put their IPO plans on hold due to political and market uncertainty.

That is expected to change this year as interest rates have fallen and US President Donald Trump has laid out a more tech-friendly regulatory agenda.

Discord was last valued at about $15bn in a 2021 fundraising, according to PitchBook. The company’s revived IPO plans remain subject to change, one of the people said.

“We understand there is a lot of interest around Discord’s future plans, but we do not comment on rumours or speculation,” the company said in a statement shared with the Financial Times. “Our focus remains on delivering the best possible experience for our users and building a strong, sustainable business.”

CoreWeave, an artificial intelligence cloud computing provider, filed for a New York IPO this month that would raise about $4bn and value the group at more than $35bn, which could make it the largest tech flotation of the year.

A series of valuable start-ups, including fintech groups Stripe and Chime and data platform Databricks that had been forced to stay private far longer than planned are expected to reignite plans to list their shares.

Discord initially found popularity among gamers, as well as retail trading and cryptocurrency communities, but has since sought to broaden its appeal to a mass audience.

The company has largely shunned advertising, in contrast to larger rivals such as Meta, X and Reddit, in favour of offering its users premium features for a fee.

In 2021, it attracted interest from multiple Big Tech groups, rebuffing a $12bn takeover bid from Microsoft. The recent IPO plans were first reported by The New York Times.
