As Chair of Brookfield, Mark Carney used offshore tax havens like Bermuda to dodge paying taxes in Canada.

While Canadians pay more for less, corporations play by different rules.

Only the NDP fight for tax fairness.

Published April 02, 2025 at 6:16AM EDT. Image of Brookfield Partners L.P. at their listed business address 73 Front Street, Hamilton, 5th Floor, Bermuda. The storefront looks shoddy, and nothing like what you would expect from a major capital management firm.

Canada’s future shouldn’t be left to chance. Greens are pushing for real solutions that protect our sovereignty, economy, and democracy. #VoteForIt

Tweet from Jonathan Pedneault on a green gradient background. Text reads "Greens are fighting for affordability. We're fighting for a Canada that has control over its own resources. Most importantly we're fighting for a livable future. While Canadians wait in uncertainty for news about the threatened tariffs, Greens are advocating for YOU."

The Green Party will participate in two federal leaders' debates this month after meeting the minimum requirements to attend, organizers said Tuesday.

The Leaders' Debates Commission said the party met two of the three required criteria to have its leader invited to both the French debate on April 16 and the English debate April 17.

Both debates will take place at 7 p.m. in Montreal.

It hadn't been certain whether the Greens would qualify, because the threshold to attend was higher this year than in 2021. Back then, parties only had to meet one of three criteria.

This year, it was two of the following three:

  • The leader's party had to be represented in the House of Commons by at least one MP before dissolution.
  • The leader's party must be polling at least four per cent 28 days before voting day, based on the most recent results of "leading national public opinion polling organizations."
  • The party must have candidates nominated in at least 90 per cent of federal ridings across Canada, also 28 days before the federal election.

The Greens made the cut for the first and third criteria. The party has two co-leaders: Jonathan Pedneault and Elizabeth May, but it is Pedneault taking on "singular leadership roles" when required during the campaign.

"In a surprise announcement today, Liberal leader Mark Carney has committed to implementing proportional representation within the first 100 days of forming government after the April 28th election.

'We have heard Canadians loud and clear,' Carney stated during a campaign stop in Winnipeg. 'The time for electoral reform is now, and we are fully committed to ensuring every vote counts.'

The Liberal plan would introduce a Mixed Member Proportional system similar to New Zealand's, with the legislation to be drafted immediately after the election.

'This isn't just a promise,' Carney added. 'We've already prepared the draft legislation and have secured cross-party support.'

When asked about the party's previous broken promise on electoral reform in 2015, Carney displayed a calendar prominently showing today's date — April 1st, 2025.

'April Fools!' the Liberal leader laughed. 'We've been making this same promise since Mackenzie King in 1919. Did you really think we'd follow through this time?'

Carney then unveiled the party's actual platform: 'Making Every Vote Count*'

*Fine print: Terms and conditions apply. Promise valid only until election day. Not available in provinces where electoral reform is desired."

Is Pierre Poilievre too 'in sync' with Donald Trump?

The Alberta premier thought it was a good thing — a top Conservative strategist begged to differ

Aaron Wherry

Six months ago, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre seemed to be riding a populist wave to the prime minister's office. And while he still might win power, right now that wave is being undercut by the spectre and reality of the world's most powerful populist. (Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press)

The most controversial statement of the federal election so far was uttered before the campaign even started — not by a federal politician, but the premier of Alberta.

In an interview taped on March 8 with a right-wing American media outlet, Danielle Smith said that, while there would always be disagreements, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre would be "very much in sync with … the new direction in America" and that Canada and the United States would "have a great relationship" for as long as Poilievre and Donald Trump were in office.

"If we do have Pierre as our prime minister, then I think there's a number of things that we could do together," Smith said. "Pierre believes in development, he believes in low-cost energy, he believes that we need to have low taxes, doesn't believe in any of the woke stuff that we've seen taking over our politics for the last five years."

Fair Vote Canada 🗳️🍁 on Bluesky

The far-right hijacked the GOP and gained power in the U.S. thanks to first-past-the-post.

Proportional representation prevents hostile takeovers—no group gets outsized influence without real voter support.

#cdnpoli #Election2025

Flowchart titled "Power of extremists by voting system" comparing first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR). Under FPTP: an extremist politician becomes leader of a major party, the party wins 100% power with 39% of the vote, and the extremist leads the country. Under PR: the extremist becomes leader of a small party, wins a proportional block of seats, and the impact of the extremist is limited. Asterisks define a political extremist as someone with beliefs far outside the mainstream.

Pierre Poilievre is Trying to Distance Himself From Donald Trump. American Right-Wing Media Keeps Praising Poilievre

American right-wing MAGA personalities are rooting for Pierre Poilievre

Eric Wickham

2025-03-28

Despite Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s recent attempts to distance himself from US President Donald Trump, American right-wing MAGA media personalities and influencers have been some of Poilievre’s biggest supporters.

Poilievre has enjoyed several years of sympathetic coverage from right-wing media in the United States. However, as soon as Trump began talking about applying tariffs to Canadian products and making Canada the 51st state, Poilievre’s alignment with Donald Trump has appeared to become a liability for the Conservative Party’s hopes to form government.

The Conservative leader has watched his once seemingly insurmountable lead in the polls disappear over the past few months. According to the Toronto Star, Conservative insiders discussed using MP Jamil Jivani to send backchannel communications to his best friend, Vice President JD Vance, requesting Trump distance himself from Poilievre.

Poilievre has received kind words from Trump in the past. On January 6, 2025, in an interview with right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump expressed positive feelings about the opportunity of working with Poilievre as Canada’s prime minister

@mark-carney.bsky.social If we want to be more like Europe, Canada needs proportional representation; if we want to to be more like Trump's USA, we can keep the antiquated first-past-the-post voting system. #cdnpoli

In the wake of ongoing tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration, Canadians are looking for local alternatives to American products. For folks hoping to purchase the favour of a government official, we’ve assembled a list of some of the finest cowards, puppets, and shills that Canada has to offer.

Danielle Smith

For the low, low, price of 10,000 elk killed in an open-pit mine, folks with coal money can purchase a Premier who is as morally corrupt as her American counterparts – yet retains that uniquely Canadian ability to suffocate pristine landscape under a sea of bitumen like it’s the future of a healthcare employee. Plus, every purchase of Danielle Smith comes with a free Kevin O’Leary, who is only one set of dogshit hair plugs away from going Full Musk.

Doug Ford

While the best buy for condo developers, this late model Ford is still a worthy purchase as long as you can get a family discount. Plus he comes with a bunch of neat hats which makes him look very cool and not at all like a giant loser who everyone talks shit about the second you leave the room, Doug.

Justin Trudeau

If ethics aren’t your thing, this gently used PM-turned-MP is all yours for a little light bribery – plus, he comes in a variety of colours!

Pierre Poilievre

Don’t let your dream of owning a potato-faced dork be limited to members of the GOP! With the charm of a hemorrhoid and the charisma of a bowl of cold chowder smeared across a Circle K bathroom, Poilievre is an effective multi-tool capable of capitulating to big business all while knee-capping affordable housing. He is currently in the process of blowing a slam-dunk election, however, so be sure to snatch him up before he’s gone!
