⚠️ PSA for Bassin users:
A security issue was discovered and fixed in the latest Bassin app, but you're not safe until you update it.
Open the Umbrel App Store and update Bassin ASAP.

https://github.com/duckaxe/bassin/issues/23#issuecomment-3640779220

What happened? Bassin uses the ckPool container from hub.docker.com/r/pinkyswear/ckpool-solo - this is linked in the readme: duckaxe/bassin#repositories
Bassin itself does not set a payout address, which can be seen in the code: getumbrel/umbrel-apps@master/bassin/data/config/ckpool.conf.template
Does this mean that the ckPool image i used in Bassin hub.docker.com/r/pinkyswear/ckpool-solo is compromised?

Following a discussion on Discord, I can confirm that the ckPool Docker image I use for Bassin has been compromised.

umbrel decides to make their own, legit docker image at https://github.com/getumbrel/docker-ckpool-solo

https://github.com/getumbrel/umbrel-apps/pull/4230#issuecomment-3641463579

@duckaxe I have created a new ckpool Docker image under the @getumbrel org. It's a drop in replacement for the existing image you're using. You can use it at ghcr.io/getumbrel/docker-ckpool-solo:590fb2a. It builds ckpool-solo from source at the commit 590fb2a which is the current tip of the solobtc branch. (The last version tag is quite a few years old so I presume this is what is considered the latest version)

Public Pool Announcement:

  1. Stratum TLS support has been added for end to end privacy. Esp-miner is currently in the process of merging in support as well and this will be the recommended way to connect. (Port 4333). The recommended clear text port has been moved from 21496 to 3333 as well but both will be available.

  2. I am ending the affiliate payout program. It hasn't been very popular, requiring monthly attention and I will instead divert the funds to hosting costs and continued 0% block fees.

  3. Devices without an ASIC should find another server or service to use. It is likely I will increase the minimum difficulty in the future. Support was initially added for the OG nerdminer for the purposes of fun and learning but since retailers have abused consumer ignorance and these devices are creating unreasonable load on the server, sometimes maliciously with nothing to show for it. If you are one of these people you can always run your own stratum server, many solutions now exist.

BTC solo miners beware! Both http://zsolo.bid/ and http://luckymonster.pro/ are 100% scam mining pools. They are simply using your hash power for their own gain. My evidence captured here: https://github.com/mweinberg/stratum-speed-test/tree/main/findings

Changed

  • Bookkeeper reduced logging for large imports to increase speed.
  • SQL initial load for tables is much faster (e.g 82 to 17 seconds for very large channelmoves table).

Fixed

  • Core lightning builds for Ubuntu Focal, Jammy and Noble are deterministic again.
  • Bookkeeper first invocation after migration from prior to 25.09 with very large databases will not crash.
  • xpay payment parts status will not be pending in failure cases (as seen in listpays or listsendpays).
  • Askrene would not enter an infinite loop.
  • bcli would fail with "Argument list too long" when sending a giant tx.
  • Dealing with giant PSBTs (700 inputs!) is now much faster.
  • Assertion crash in bookkeeper when fresh records arrive while multiple queries in progress.
  • Bookkeeper now correctly restores chain event blockheights it has derived.

In many Asian families, red envelopes (hongbao) are given during Lunar New Year, weddings, and births. They carry more than money, they carry meaning, tradition, and memory.

When my son was born in 2021, his grandmother gave him red envelopes filled with cash. Around the same time, a friend handed me a plain white envelope with a QR code, an Ethereum address full of random tokens. That contrast sparked an idea: what if Bitcoin could be gifted in a way that was tangible, cultural, and memorable like a hongbao?

I created a Bitcoin paper wallet for my son. Each year I added a small amount, something he could one day understand and move to his own wallet. From that experiment, Hongbao Bitcoin was born.

After months of design work, setbacks including losing an entire shipment of envelopes to customs, and redesigns, we have finally reached a milestone: the envelopes are now shipping.

The concept is simple:

Printable Bitcoin paper wallets with public key on the front and private key on the back

Personalized with custom visual styles and portraits

Designed as gifts that feel cultural, not transactional

We see Hongbao Bitcoin as a bridge, a way to introduce Bitcoin through something familiar and heartfelt.

When BTC continues to half it will deincentivise people to mine it. Their rewards will drop as the price of electricity stays the same in that moment.

How will this affect BTC's usability? If less people are mining then does that mean there will be a traffic jam when people want to transact, thus significantly raising transaction fees and slowing the process? This will deincentivise people from wanting to use BTC.

At this point what else would people flock to to keep currency sovereignty?

BTC Lightning? Though this is dependent on BTC as a whole right?

Monero maybe? I don't know really anything on how that coin works.

A lot the hype around this spike is driven by the absolute state of the US Dollar right now.

If you look at BTC vs GBP it's barely cracking the ATH it achieved in February
