As a Lifelong user of FOSS software, I thought you could just install any .ipa now like on android, and I was shocked to discover that just being able to install from Safari now changes nothing about how you install Apps. You still need to sign all packages with an Apple authorized Key to even be able to look at the App, and theres no way of Trusting other sources for Keys, like in SSL, Ssh, and general cryptography. This way, if I want to install anything for more than 7 days, I need a 99€/year Apple Subscription, together with my Full Name and Address.

So why the fuck did the EU just call it a day with this, since you still need a Apples consent to sign your App? If Apple dosent want your App on their Ecosystem, now instead of just removing it from the store they can just ban your Signature alltogether. Literally nothing has changed, apple still has as much control over your Devices as before, but now theres just this Sticker that says „now 30% more consumer friendly“ on the box.

And also, there is still no Official tutorial of how to install apps, and even in the Forum every single Thread about this gets closed with a generic „If you need Locally signed Apps for your Device, please buy this enterprise grade Management software for a billion bucks a month“. Nothing about installing ipas through Apple devices, nothing about signing an app, just the same bullshit.

so did it change anything at all, or is the Ecosystem still as locked down as before?

I received a text notification from an unknown number earlier today. I'm usually suspicious of such things, but clicked the notification. The messages app loaded, but displayed a blank white screen until I closed the app. After doing so, there was no evidence of the message notification or the message itself, in any of the message categories (known, unknown, all, deleted messages, etc).

This is on an iPhone 14 Pro Max using a fully up to date device running iOS 18.3.1 .

Has anyone else experienced this? I am hoping that the group might be able to offer insight into whether this is a bug worth reporting to Apple, or an attack of some sort? I am aware that at least one zero-click messaging bug was recently patched in iOS. I rebooted my device, and I'm waiting for the security delay to expire so I can reset my iCloud password. I have 2FA and stolen device protection switched on.

(please disregard link to example.com ; my Lemmy client wouldn't allow a text-only post without an image or a link).

Got the 621 and it kind of sucks. Constantly disconnects and slow charging. Wonder if this is just the product

I’m usually an Android/Linux user, but also use an iPad. In both Android and Linux I manage to have a mostly ad free experience, with Piped, for example, or with a plugin combo in Firefox. Is there a way to have this on the iPad? The whole no plugin thing in iPad Firefox is quite maddening.

I've installed NTFS-3g but as far as I can tell it only allows me to mount and write to NTFS partitions, I need to actually create one. Free as in beer.

So as you may know, iOS 18.1 and watchOS 18.1 is out. And i decided to updste both my phone and watch simultaneously. (They were both plugged in) The phone finished first, but when the apple watch finished, it stopped charging, and instead discharging. (it was plugged in). Well after i clicked on the battery percentage on the watch face, it odly says that its at 100%, while the watchface says 98%. Anyone encountered this bug?

I upgraded only because the speakers on my 12 Mini were failing making it nearly impossible to have a phone call.

(1) This phone is too big, heavy, and slippery and uneasy to grasp with one hand.
(2) The camera bump is ridiculously large. It’s laughable how much it rocks on the counter as you type on it. Not in a good way.
(3) The Camera button is in the worst place (accidentally clicking it constantly) and too confusing so I disabled it forever.
(4) I also disabled the action button. This seems too easy to disable silent mode which I have enabled 99.9% of the time.
(5) The screen is noticeably worse and has a blue cast. It’s not as sharp and the contrast is dull.
(6) I love the material used on the back, even though it makes it difficult to hold.

I fully understand the hardware is significantly more advanced but the iPhone 16 genuinely feels like a downgrade from the iPhone 12 Mini. I’m not happy at all.

I’m going to stop by the Apple Store this weekend and look at getting the SE.

Update:

After a couple weeks, I can confirm that I still hate how gigantic this phone is. I had to get a case so that I can use it laid flat. It's like packing a laptop in my front pocket so I either put it in my back pocket or carry a bag. It STILL wobbles.

I have to use two hands to do most things. Shockingly, web sites and apps still don't properly fit on the screen. The camera is just ok. Speakers are pretty good. I have no use for Apple AI other than the occasional image edit (which other apps do).

I've replaced the shitty Apple camera app with Halide. I access this from Control Center. I swipe left from the home screen to access the default video camera. I found a cool trick to utilize the Action button - use it to access a menu built in Shortcuts (basically mimicking Control Center). I would one thousand percent prefer to get rid of the camera button entirely.

I guess I've adjusted to the screen though it still seems too blue to me.

I really can't think of one reason anyone would choose to upgrade to this phone.

This phone would be perfect if (1) Apple shifted more of the weight towards the bottom, (2) removed one camera, (3) recessed the camera entirely, (4) made the back from smooth (sticky) glass that wasn't nano-textured, (5) reduced the height and width dimensions by 10mm, (6) got rid of the camera button.

The inconvenience of being on US English (I'm Australian) simply wasn't worth it for me and I've switched it off.

The summaries are okay but not groundbreaking Photos features are gimmicky Siri is no more useful, only benefit is it was now more responsive and accurate for Home Control commands Most features simply don't exist yet

I'm kinda shocked Apple has rushed this to market in the current state

How have you been finding AppleInt?

I have been trying in vain to do this in both automator and shortcuts.

The trouble seems to be happening right at the very start. I can't seem to figure out how to get selected files from finder to be passed as input to a shell script running exiftool.

I actually thought this might be a good thing for me to test using chatGPT for as it's meant to be good at this type of thing and while I assume the shell scripts it was generating were probably good, it couldn't seem to get me passed this basic first step.

I've tried making the shortcut a quick action, which by default adds the 'receive' action to the shortcut, but somehow it seems to be impossible to get the output from that to be the input for the shell script, nothing works. This was tested with a few debugging steps to log the output and it definitely looks like that first step is where things are going wrong. I really don't get it. This was way harder than I expected.

I'm trying to avoid having to throw away my decklink mini monitor 4k that I used in my old PC build. It's a PCIe gen 2 4-lane card.

To replace this card with something new of similar function that uses external ports, I have to either buy something quite a bit worse in terms of function for a little bit more than my current PCIe version currently costs, or something equivalent in function for way, way more than the 4k decklink costs.

I figured best bet would be to just get a PCIe enclosure to keep using my old card with the new laptop but the costs of those enclosures are STAGGERING, just unbelievably high. The cheapest I could find is 2nd hand and so old it uses TB2 ports. I thought that might be okay with thunderbolt adaptors for modern connectors but it occurs to me that Apple Silicon driver support could be an issue. Any idea if it would even work?

A Senior Advisor at Apple Support told me a few minutes ago that if I am wearing the watch the notifications go there and not the phone, and that’s how it was designed and there’s nothing I can do. I’ve had the watch for a good few months now, and I could totally be crazy, but I do NOT remember this fuckery being the case back then. Am I nuts?

This may be a stupid question, I realize.

I really love and regularly use a split keyboard.

I’ve been hoping to fix these bugs for many years, for a very long time. The bug has been reported many times by me and other suffering users. No changes in all these years.

I'm trying not to just resist everything new in mac OS right away, but this whole focus concept and do not disturb mode turning on without me asking it to and not having any option to disable it is just too much. I can imagine maybe using this in some exceptional circumstances where it actually occurred to me to do so, but I definitely want it to be a conscious decision.

In the preferences I could find no off switch. I tried setting it to only turn on when I'm in Antarctica and off when I'm not but it didn't seem to actually work as the little moon icon remained there even after this. I also tried to scheduling it to operate in a one minute window but even after that window elapsed it continued to be in 'do not disturb mode'. I don't tend to get a whole lot of notifications nor rely on them much but frankly the idea that they're being suppressed not under direction from me is infuriating and I don't want that to happen.

I really, really hate Stage Manager on the iPad, but I want to use an external display to allow me to have 3 or 4 apps open at a time and all showing. I.e. not just mirroring my old style multitasking display on the external monitor.

Come on @apple
