Well, this is an interesting example of a pay for social network that apparently has existed since 1985. 2,700 members is not that big a site in the modern internet. So if you don't want to become a unicorn company or have wide appeal / access, it seems like it does work as a business model?

I'm vaguely intrigued but I don't really want to put down $15 sight unseen for a month to see if the forums are even interesting. Then again, I can't imagine they get bots at that price either. Probably very limited ads if any.

I am always excited by alternate operating plans for social media online - this one is kind of the opposite of Lemmy, but also the opposite of the major players. I guess orthogonal in reality.

BTW / OT: How do you crosspost on Lemmy?

and as always, the culprit is ChatGPT. Stack Overflow Inc. won't let their mods take down AI-generated content

I thought this was an interesting read. Shocked to see there are paid mods though (author clearly doesn't know the difference between moderators and janitors)

As we reach the second half of 2023, what are some of the supposed releases, or news you're looking forward to?

Adding OpenAI to their cloud products and windows 11 highlights a missed opportunity to have AI vertically integrated in their mobile products.

I've recently decided to switch out my Playstore apps for Open Source Apps as they're usually Ad Free and much less bloated. Can we use this thread to help people find open source android apps?

I'll start

K-9 mail, a great email alternative that let's you have multiple users logged in

Red Moon - A customisable night light app which lets you adjust the colour and settings including Colour, opacity and Darkness

Swift Notes - Note taking app

Planned obsolescence, and why Apple dumped thousands of working computers in a landfill.

There's a really interesting documentary up by The Verge that's a must-watch for anyone with an interest in the circular economy and tech waste.

It tells the story of how, early in its existence, Apple used to resell the working but obsolete computers that it couldn't sell to a distributor (who would sell them at a lower price).

But one day, that all changed. Apple decided to reclaim thousands of the still working old computers from the distributor, and dumped them in a landfill.

(For people with an interest in retrocomputing and Apple, it also tells the sad story of what ended up happening to the company's Lisa systems.)

Planned obsolescence is not an accident. It's a design choice.

Twitter wasn’t just software or visible leadership (for better or worse) but an entire important slice of Internet history.

I'm making a community with a bunch of archived photos and videos I have of cats getting pulled along in shoeboxes in a train like formation - I'm calling it CatTrain.

Anyway typically I would host it on Reddit any they would come from v.reddit (after Imgur got all pissy) but I want to avoid using Reddits backend after they also decided to change direction.

What does everyone recommend?

Hello guys, I am a CS engineer and from time to time I see this term "Digital Humanities" thrown around. After a few internet search I still haven't understood.

Do you know what is it all about?

From now on, anyone who's not from New Zealand is banned from making a government ad about cybersecurity.

I'm sorry, but the Kiwis have nailed it:
