Charlie Brown walks along with his shoulders slumped. He says,"Poor Charlie Brown...I feel so sorry for him..."

Patty stands nearby and looks at him questioningly as he continues,"Poor li'l ol' Charlie Brown"

She walks up to him, points, and exclaims,"What sort of talk is that? YOU'RE Charlie Brown!!"

He walks off and retorts over his shoulder, "So what? Can't a fellow feel sorry for himself?!"

Charlie Brown stoops watching Patty crouch on the ground with seeds in her hand. She says,"Mighty oaks from little acorns grow" He asks,"Really?"

She kneels, plants the seed, and replies,"Sure, we'll plant this acorn now, and an oak tree will grow right here" He says,"Well, I'll be...."

She stands, looing around her in confusion. She wonders,"Now, where did he go?"

He reappears with an axe and looks at the area where the seed is planted. She exclaims,"Hey! Get away from here with that!!"

Violet is jumping rope and she is saying "Eleventy-Six, Thirty-Twelve,"

Violet is still jumping and saying " Fifty-Four-Forty, Sixty-One-Teen..."

Shermy is running and he yells "Hey, Violet!"

Violet stops jumping and is upset as she says to Shermy, "Now look what you've done! You've made me lose count!"

As she walks along with him, he continues,"I finished it in one day!"

She follows him up the stairs and says,"I didn't know you could even read, Charlie Brown..."

He stops and turns to her, holding out the book. He exclaims,"Do you think I could finish this book in one day if I knew how to read?!"

Charlie Brown stands up and points and says, "He's right over there, madam..."

Charlie Brown is sitting and Patty says, "But how can I be sure which one the captain is?"

Charlie Brown turns and looks at Patty and says, "His hat is made from the editorial section!"

He frowns to the reader as she says,"If you do that, you'll spoil the rest of your dinner..."

He retorts,"Well, I'd feel a whole lot worse if the dinner spoiled my dessert!"

A puzzled Charlie Brown looks over his shoulder as a voice cries,"They're ruined!! They're all ruined!"

He runs towards the voice as it continues,"They're ruined!!" "Every one of them!"

He approaches Violet, who is sitting on the ground between her shovel/pail and an overturned table, crying. He asks,"What's the matter, Violet?" She replies,"My mud pies are ruined..."

She stands up and points to them behind the overturned table. She concludes,"They fell in the dirt!"

At this point in the strip, the art style is in it’s second phase (1951)
