Saw this over on the other site. Seems like a fantastic idea.

I love that the picture shows Home Depot. A company with the track record of donating to republicans.

Apparently Rona is also American. Peavy is going out of business. I wish there was a better hardware store than Canadian Tire around me.

Home hardware is fantastic. They even have a "home supply" brand in many places that sells building supplies.

Rona is Canadian. HQ in Quebec.

Rona is owned by a US private equity firm. It was Canadian, but not for years now.

God damn. What does that mean in terms of tax, etc? They still pay corporation tax and whatnot in Canada? Profits, etc. reported in Canada or repatriated to the US?

What about Home Hardware?

[–] CanadianCorhen@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

home hardware is canadian... but at least in my small community they are very small stores

I can't say what it means for tax, but I assume it's similar to Walmart or other US chains operating with a Canadian subsidiary corporation(ie Walmart Canada vs Walmart). I'm guessing the money goes back home.

After a quick search it seems like Home Hardwares are still independent and Canadian owned. When I was a kid, the ones around here were all owned by regular people who lived in the town the store was in. Canadian Tire is similar I believe.

Man, that sucks about Rona. I guess it's similar with Tim Hortons, Wendy, Burger King all being HQd in Toronto but owned by a Brazilian fund?

[–] Poop@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, pretty much. I'm going to try my best to shop at Home Hardware now.

I'm going to be honest, this conveys support in the eyes of Americans. You can't use iconography to disparage them they just recognize shapes and colors and think you are cheering.

Which honestly makes this perfect. Imagine Fox picks this up and runs with a story like "The fake media claims Canadians are boycotting American goods, but look at this supportive stencil!"

Which via the Streisand effect will cause it to be used more and hopefully result in a more effective boycott.

[–] Auntievenim@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I could see it happening that way lol Add a little rat at the bottom or something to really drive home the point!

Good use of graffiti frankly, especially when contrasted with most of the other graffiti we've been seeing.
