From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Is this one of those things where people try to install Linux on something simply to see if it can be done, or is there a practical upshot to this?

i call it intellectual masturbation for linux enthusiasts and i enjoy partaking. lol

this one's fascinating if you've ever wondered how one cpu architecture can be emulated upon another and how memory can be managed outside of the original architecture.

i kind of see this as a form of artistic expression.

at first i thought you wrote AUTistic expression and i was marveling at how perceptive you were and i boggled at how you figured it out. lol

this is next level insanity and I am in awe.

i'm in awe of the depth he went to, emulating a machine that was emulated on another machine that emulated linux; i lost track of the inception layers once he got to animal crossings. lol

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 3 points 10 months ago

it's purely to see if it can be done

TIL Animal Crossing has a fucking NES emulador inside the game that can run any ROM. Why?

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 3 points 10 months ago

You could get special NES items in the game for completing certain tasks. They designed the emulator to work with arbitrary ROMs so they could add ROMs later as part of nintendo promotions and events using the eReader Cards.

These custom items are encoded in a standard format in a user's save file, so you can still visit people's towns and transfer these items around.

I remember running linux on a Sega Dreamcast. It didn't do anything, but I had fun doing it. I didn't have the network cable dongle.

do you load it via cartridge?!!?

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

naturally, although the video just does it using a rom

embedded linux! im too dumb to understand most of this but, im glad there are people out there with the brains and willpower to create projects like this. its not only like novelty value, but can really show potential future use cases for how we can make use of obsolete hardware etc. creative thinking is crucial in times like these, where mainstream is stripping away the value of art and creation. cool project!
