The year is 2005. The tech community is within a deep AI winter. The pioneering Roomba, the most visible robot on Earth, operates using a primitive random-walk algorithm and keeps driving until it hits something. Last year's Grand Challenge, an attempt to test autonomous off-road navigation, ends in total and dismal failure. Then a little blue rally car shows up and decides: "Nah, I'd win."
