Strange. I looked up the area on street view and there are sidewalks and a few cross walks on the road. It might not be pleasant, but certainly seems doable. Certainly better that a 6hr detour.

Exactly. This is the overpass which is, frankly, one of the better pedestrian overpasses I've seen. Could it be better? 100% For one thing it needs more overhead lighting to a driver can more easily see a walker at night. Not to mention actual cross-walk paint and signage.
But at least all on/off-ramp crossings have long visibility sight lines for both the walker and the driver. I have one near me that is just HORRIBLE. The walker has no real sight line to a fast moving car, and the driver will have their eyes trained in the wrong direction looking for cars and would never see the pedestrian.
I had a similar two hour route given to me by google once. I assumed they knew what they were talking about, so I took the detour there and back for a combined four hours. Next day I had my car back and drove through, and there was totally a sidewalk I just couldn’t see it from where I was standing.
Next time I’m just jaywalking, sidewalk or not.
If they are both on the same road, does it not have a red light or something?
What is the straight short line between the two places like, then? I presume there's a terrible lack of pavement?
There's pavement all right; it's getting across the four-lane high-speed road that's the problem

ahhh thats not too bad
Frogger style 🙃
Just walk under it bro, it's not like there's some 11 ft 8 inch bridge. /s
Yeah I mean just take a walk in pretty much any town or city in the US* and you will quickly see how everything was designed only with cars in mind and just the smallest nod to pedestrians. Like for anything more than crossing the street it is abysmal.
- There are some walkable areas but they are a fairly rare exception
The real issue is that you're using Google Maps and Google Maps is notoriously bad when creating pedestrian or bike routes. For those cases you should use a router that's based on OpenStreetMap since OSM's database it's way better when dealing with foot and bike infrastructure. The same route using an OSM based router gives a perfectly fine walkable route.

Is that a safe walk? 🤔
There are some sidewalks, so it could be safe.
Have you considered digging a tunnel under the freeway?
See, there were smart people at work here. By forcing people into cars, no one will accidentally draw the sigil of Nyarlathotep on the ground. Nyarlathotep is called The Crawling Chaos for a reason.
This is a problem I have with Google Maps, who insists that some roads cannot be bicycled upon. Maybe because they're designated as freeways? Dunno!
But yes, sometimes Google doesn't have enough information about the pathways that are for other than cars.
I tend to have the opposite problem, where I get recommended to go 3 km along a road with a speed limit twice my maximum speed and only a 2ft sidewalk on one side (that sometimes disappears).
2km are a ~20min walk
What stores are they?
