The world we live in isn't just dystopic, it isn't just stupid, trying to describe all the ways it sucks just makes for a really boring story.

Come to think of it though, I doubt anyone would have let him anywhere near real weapons. Honest work in some backwater part of the logistics train might have done him some good though.
