This isn't about chatbots and LLMs.
Not mentioned in the article but Gemini is obviously developed by the DeepMind teams, among many other things.
True, but the institution here is more about the scientific uses of AI.
The Ministry of Science and ICT framed it as a key element of Korea’s “K-Moonshot” project, which brings together AI and science capabilities to address major national challenges.
They specifically reference AlphaFold as an example of the kinds of advancements that they're aiming at. The DeepMind team is involved in most of Google's AI projects as they're the leading researchers on the topic.
I meant that this isn't a school opening to push the technologies responsible for the current AI/LLM/ChatBot bubble that is causing all of the negative societal effects. This is more of an advanced Machine Learning (including neural networks and Transformer chased models) institute than a Chatbot/gen AI factory.
Too many people conflate the two things so the real science portion of machine learning is catching strays from the fight against the capitalist orgy around generative AI/chatbots.
It's important to acknowledge the difference.
I know this is not the most popular opinion here, but I genuinely believe this is awesome. The world of the future will at least have AI components, and Demis Hassabis and DeepMind have a record of actually trying to help humanity. Just think of AlphaFold!
So, I get why you guys are sceptical. Hell, I'm currently in the process of removing Google apps from my life. But a new AI campus? Sounds amazing.
Firstly, research like AlphaFold falls under the umbrella of biological research known as the transhuman project, representing the next phase of humanism.
In other words, it's a project that attempts to disable the work of the first creator and control the course of processes like creation and evolution through human intervention. Essentially, they aim to biologically advance humanity to another stage in the evolutionary process by bypassing God's creation.
All of these projects are funded by US-based foundations and organizations. This reveals that such projects serve not humanity, but certain vested interests and elitist groups.
