"After Montreal trip blocked, Rima Hassan arrested in France over social media post"

[–] 73ms@sopuli.xyz 24 points 1 week ago (3 children)

not a great rule considering how much clickbait even reputable news outlets engage in these days... can see it a bit even in this one...

This politician is a tankie nutjob who happens to be a pro-palestinian activist.

She voted against every single EU resolution condemning Russia's war on Ukraine.

She shared on social media a picture of a politician with this message :

"He is a friend of genociders. He sleeps well at night. That will not last long"

Then he received this message :

"I see your empty eyes in the halls of the European Parliament. You should be afraid. It's just the beginning"

He ended up going to the police :

More recently, the French writer Boualem Sansal was jailed on bullshit charges in Algeria.

He did not have a fair trial. He didn't even get access to a lawyer.

https://www.pen-international.org/news/algeria-novelist-boualem-sansal-sentenced-to-five-years-in-prison

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to condemn his arrest and demand his release.

Rima Hassan was one of the only MEPs to vote against his release 🤦

One week ago, the European Parliament issued a warning against her:

The President had decided to impose a penalty on Rima Hassan for having recorded during a plenary session a Member of the European Parliament without his consent, and having subsequently disseminated the video on her social media accounts, accompanied by a personal comment.

Her behaviour had harmed Parliament’s reputation and the principle of mutual respect among Members.

She was denied a visa to Canada after she was asked two questions

  1. Did any country ever deny you a visa? (Yes)

  2. Did you ever face lawsuits? (Yes)

Instead of answering the truth, she answered "No" to both questions.

In an online post, she argued she did that because "I think these questions aren't legitimate".

That was a major mistake

Immigration Canada really doesn't give a shit about what you think.

You should never lie on a federal immigration form. That's called misrepresentation. Any foreigner who engages in misrepresentation will face denial of entry into Canada (Article 40, Canadian Law on Immigration).

When Immigration Canada discovered this, her visitor visa was automatically cancelled.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Any chance you can provide a source on that? It sounds believable, but it's not mentioned in the article OP posted, and I can't find anything else that confirms it. All reporting I've read says that CBSA refused to comment (as expected, since it concerns private information).

[–] Gorilladrums@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

People like her that being self righteous assholes makes them exempt from the law.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

She crossed a line praising the Lod massacre perpetrators. It was not an attack on the IDF, it was an indiscriminate attack on random people in an airport.

That said, we live in an era where criminal and genocidal language is spewed by the leaders of Israel, the US, and other countries. If only the same high standards were applied to them too.

[–] crapwittyname@feddit.uk 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

She's praised the perpetrators? When? Can you link it?

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

It's strange how this article mentions she is pro-palestiniens and forgot to mention she is from Palestinian decent. Overall this article doesn't provide much information about what has happened and why. Which tweet were used to accuse her ?

[–] galaxybe@lemmy.org 3 points 6 days ago

glorifying terrorism

She was supporting the Israelis?

[–] BiglyFlyBye@piefed.zip 105 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What in the world, why does Israel control what people say? So weird

[–] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works 48 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (8 children)

Israel is the West's last great colonial settler project so there has always been a predilection to turning a blind eye to international law in relation their geopolitical affairs. Far right authoritarians are often chummy with Netanyahu because he is living their colonial dream of genocide and displacement.

Why do they control what people say? I'm not sure it goes that far. But the cultural bias apparently runs deep enough in the West to ruin people's lives over it if they dissent.

Why do they control what people say? I'm not sure it goes that far.

Pretty sure that's the sole purpose of the Anti-Defamation League

If you say it's because Zionist Jews have money and wield it like a hammer you're 'antisemitic.' But also correct.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Absolutely not. Zionists have a lot of money, but most of those Zionists are not in fact Jews. Western imperialists see their interests aligning with Israel, so they support it with money and influence; it's really that simple. Thinking Israel controls the West is like thinking the hammer controls the carpenter because he doesn't want it stolen.

Only anti-Semites confuse anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 35 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No. Only Zionists confuse the two.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Zionists deliberately confuse Zionists with Jews, putting Jews at risk. Deliberately putting Jews at risk is antisemitism. Zionists are antisemites.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 0 points 6 days ago

The two aren't exclusive. But not all antisemites are Zionists.

No doubt this stemmed from here https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/policing-thought-french-bill-renewed-forms-antisemitism-accused-silencing-israel-critics

Israeli people seen to have embedded themselves in almost every (large) countries politics. It's also being noticed and will no doubt cause a massive push back.

Lawmaker, she's a MEP.
So at least the European Parlament should issue a statement.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What was the actual comment she made?

[–] markko@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (4 children)

https://www.reuters.com/world/french-far-left-member-european-parliament-rima-hassan-held-police-custody-2026-04-02/

Rima Hassan, a French far-left member of the European Parliament, was arrested on Thursday over a ‌comment she posted on X last month about an attack on an Israeli airport in the 1970s, her fellow party member Jean-Luc Melenchon said.

The message was related to the 1972 attack by the Japanese Red Army far-left militant group at Lod airport in Tel Aviv, which resulted in 26 deaths.

It seems the media may not know what her exact comment was yet.

jfc I'm getting so tired of news not including the critical information

[–] terabyterex@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

She justified the terrorist attack in 1972 at an Israeli airport

[–] andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This whole thing is Orwellian, but nothing more so imo than when stories like this report that someone was arrested for speech but doesn't actually tell us what the offending speech was.

I think it's pretty obvious that they know that they'll get in trouble with the same people if they share the message. It's quite sad.

[–] Poteau_Poutre@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Roughtly translated she wrote : Kozo Okamoto. I dedicated my whole life to the palestinian cause. When there is oppression, resistance is not only a right but a duty.

Kozo Okamoto is a japanese terrorist who killed civilians in a terrorist attack in 1972.

The apology of terrorism is illegal in France.

She is a member of the european Parliamant.

I hope these informations help to understant the context.

I don't believe in arrests for speech, but justifying shooting up an airport is not my idea of anti-imperialism. Unless the case is being misrepresented, in which case fuck whoever made this arrest.

[–] faizalr@fedia.io 12 points 1 week ago

The term #terrorist and #terrorism can easily been manilpulated fot the unjustified arrest.
