Except the war was over in all but name.
Millions more could have died in a long drawn out end. It also told the Soviets not to fuck with the US after the war.
The Japanese leaders literally were not fully convinced about surrendering after the first nuclear bomb.
There was kind of a conflict in between...
Don't forget the additional 100k dead from the firebombing of Tokyo.
