I had a bad experience with Safeway, the expected me to do 4-5 times the work for $309.00 per week. I was part time and they PURPOSELY mixed the schedule to prevent me from doing DoorDash part time. The first shift managers gave me a SUPER hard time and I was on 3rd shift, they would come in and nitpick and one even told me I had to be PERFECT for the store 🏬. They also expect me to face 5 AISLES per night and told me to stuff ALL the shelves with product. At this point, I feel like I was taken advantage of and I was doing triple the work that I did of my old high paying jobs. I feel like Safeway is for those who love their jobs, join the Union, OR are there for a quick buck. I went back into DoorDash cause I had worked for DoorDash PRIOR to Safeway (Slaveway). DoorDash pays more and even a buddy of mine said of the Safeway pay 💰: “Even Pan Handlers make more than that.”

Edited: I left out the part where the Union only cares about their paycheck and they only represent you. The Union doesn’t do anything for the coworkers there at it is pretty much, basically worthless.

Expecting excellent work for low pay is absolutely standard practice in retail. America destroyed their unions and look where it leaves you.

They’re not blocking you from DoorDash, they’re doing staff optimization which is pretty standard in American retail and makes it so that their costs fluctuate with the level of business, rather than being flat. It is extremely anti-labour, because you never have a predictable schedule.

Also, DoorDash isn’t really income. Subtract the IRS mileage deduction before you calculate your income. Spend the time picking up a trade or something.

Yep, I’m forklift certified from other companies, I wanna do Class B truck driving cause it’ll pay more than that. But $309.00 plus per week and expecting WAY more work is insanity.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Canadians don't file with the IRS.

And shitty managers absolutely schedule around making employees unable to find work elsewhere, if its really a staff scheduling issue good managers actually communicate it with affected staff. Especially when head office is dictating overly strict hours requirements.

It's not about the taxes, It's to account for depreciation, wear & tear, maintenance, & fuel.

[–] jefferyjefferson@lemmy.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The abuse is the point.

These companies want all of their grunts and customers to have no self-respect and go tell others not to have self-respect either.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 2 points 23 hours ago

Agreed 100%

[–] n4ch1sm0@piefed.social 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

These things don't exist on the east coast AFAIK. And DD is a predatory company that fucks everyone in the equation. You're also on your own for the depreciation of your car and cost of gas (damn, good luck with that), and have money set aside, up to 30%, just for taxes; not to mention keeping track of all expenses that can count as a loss to avoid paying so much in taxes. You're likely to make less than minimum wage after all is said and done.

Idk anything about Safeway, but an annoying job with union benefits sounds a lot better than doing gig economy exclusively in an economy that's going to absolutely fuck you in the ass pretty soon. Hell, you're better off picking up extra hours, studying, or working on a real side gig with that spare time than really slaving away with DD.

Trust me, the Union’s worthless at Slaveway, don’t believe the lies, also DoorDash is a filler in for me. As stated before, I get paid more at DoorDash and I’m more locally in the city I live in.

[–] DireTech@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

DD may pay more, but they aren’t covering your costs. Most people who do the numbers find it only works if you have a cheap car that gets great mileage and do maintenance yourself.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 1 points 23 hours ago

Well, you’re not wrong, but the best part about DD on my end is that they’re keeping me in the city I live in and I own a Mazda.

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I did instacart for 18months during them fat check pandemic years. I liked it a lot.

I had a 2002 Jetta VR6.

It killed my car.

killed it. early death.

then the tips went from $20 to $2.

Doordash is even worse.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 1 points 23 hours ago

I’m sorry to hear that, DD isn’t permanent for me r/n, just filling in for costs.

They’ll say they support you but then NOT support you, all they do is represent you. For instance: They won’t come in to fight for you and they just take your money 💰.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago

They aren't lies, before Sobey's bought it out the union was quite strong.

Sobey's employed every union breaking tactic they could when they made the purchase, and did their best to emulate all of the shitty american practices that force employees to depend on whatever handouts they deigned to give.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

PE-owned company whose sole purpose is to extract as much money as possible. No wonder it’s shit to work for.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Whats that, like 7 bucks per hour? Assuming you did 5 days and 8 hour shifts? I thought you yanks were supposed to earn way more than us Europoors?

[–] AstralPath@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Minimum wage in the US is abysmal.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

My country doesn't have minimum wage at all. Instead we have strong unions.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

8 hour days, $15.00 per hour 3 days per week

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Okay that's a bit better.

But anyway, seems like you have a horrible boss and employer. I wouldn't work for those kinds of people. But easy for me to say, I have a social safety net unlike you guys over there.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh trust me, I got terminated for “poor performance” apparently, they want me to slave away for them and I needed to check all the boxes. At least with DoorDash, it pays more and I’m in my city.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm glad you got something to fall back on.

The people profiting off of not paying workers are getting paid more. The workers themselves are getting paid less and have higher costs of living.

It's a shame they all vote for the same politicians, but that's another reason why conditions don't improve.

[–] remon@ani.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, I'm not even sure they exist here. Never seen one.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

What state do you live in dude?

[–] remon@ani.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago

Ahh, that’s why, I’m in America 🇺🇸

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Publix is Employee Owned if youre by one.

Imo, Employee owned companies are better (in the US) than union ones.

[–] mj_marathon@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Safeway only has stores in 17 states, statistically, you're the one one out here.

[–] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Wait, Safeway has US locations? That explains a lot.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I worked there in the 90s

it was ok, but yeah I had to do it all. Checker, bagger, bathroom cleaner, stocker, dairy, bread, produce, clean the meat department.. .etc

I refused to clean the meat department after a time, it was just too much for me at the time and made me vegetarian for a bunch of years

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

I too became vegan for a long time after being exposed to ..the conditions.

Im still veg first.

In 1985 Woolworths Limited successfully acquired the Australian subsidiary of Safeway, Inc.

Following the purchase by Woolworths, the Safeway stores in New South Wales and Queensland were renamed as Woolworths Supermarkets.

Yep, never seen one. Born after 85 and from Qld.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, I live in a civilised country.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

That’s why then

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That’s crazy because Safeway is super high. They have them where my mother lives. I prefer not to shop there when I visit. I have shops I prefer there, even though I’ve been like 5 times in the last 20 years. All I will say for Safeway is their stores tend to be clean. But there are exceptions.

[–] Metalhead7187@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago

Exactly, they are only clean cause of some janitorial guy working nights.
