Let's say you have 800 friends. What service do you recommend to try to convince FB users to move ? This platform would have to have all the same functions, videos, pictures, events, pages, etc.

I know of nothing like this i could even suggest to friends to switch to (and there's almost no way anyone actually would) but I am curious. I dont think it exists, likely purely of the cost to run such a platform without it being a data stealing cesspool like fb.

And dont say "the fediverse" because I hardly understand how it works myself, and the links are scary looking to my friends so that is a no go.

I always think of Dunbar’s Number when talking to people about large friend groups on social media.

It’s worth using as a tool to understand what 800 friends might actually mean in reality.

[–] Son_of_Macha@lemmy.cafe 20 points 1 day ago

You need to cut the cord and wise up, you don't have 800 friends.

Can I just take this opportunity to vent, I'm so annoyed. My grandsons school closed due to the asbestos kinetic sand thing, you know how they informed everyone, and blindly expected every one to see it, exactly as it was released. I violently hate the fact schools and official places use Facebook for community noticeboards and communication tools. I appreciate your efforts.

Eta, my grandson is in my care, he's asd lvl 3 and of course I turned up to take him to school, why couldn't they just email or text. They can text you if you're late dropping off etc.

Thats frustrating.

Your restrictions on excluding the fediverse are nonsensical.

I'm running Firefox on Windows and lemmy is a fucking mess, no way I would recommend this place. Edge is a little better.

There are comms where I simply cannot post. Had assumed I was blocked but another user looked and I am not. Make a post, hit submit, page refreshes, nada. Both browsers do this, have to change accounts for my post to work.

Pics that are directly uploaded are "frozen", can't expand them, if it's too small, oh well, can't see it.

Weird graphic artifacts on Firefox, can't tell where my cursor is. This only happens on lemmy.

And on and on and on.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I only do that because it's very hard to understand. People want easy.

[–] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the only hard part is choosing what server to setup your account on. Just link to the one you're on and they don't really need to know the complicated part exists

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I would assume everyone would just use friendicia.world and then we are kind of back in the same centralized boat right?

[–] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Wait... I just noticed the server you're on. Since it's not lemmy.world, is this a shitpost?

I didn't actually bother reading up on the instance. I've got some good mates out near Quebec. Its a nice area

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

Wish I lived there! Im north but not that far

[–] Robin@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

No, even then people have the choice to migrate to a different host if they don't like the direction .world is going. There is no lock-in

Wouldn't you need to make a new account and start over ?

Ill have to try for myself !

[–] vk6flab@lemmy.radio 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That makes no sense.

You can create a Lemmy or Mastodon account in moments with nothing more than a web browser.

Is that the entire fediverse, no.

Is Facebook one thing, also no.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Even with lemmy, you still have to decide on an instance and then make totally new accounts if you ever want to move an instance, which is very annoying.

I'd disagree, FB is just one thing. You log in, it's all there. I'm not defending it, that's just how it is.

I don't know anything about Mastodon - I actually thought that was a xitter replacement?

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

A Lemmy server is like Facebook if there were a hundred other Facebooks people could be on and connect to. There's no reason for you all not to join the same server. People who care enough can move easily.

The only thing I'd say is bad is if you pick the wrong server and it shuts down because then everyone is forced to find a new server.

Mate, I don't believe in hell, but you just described it to a 'T'. Good luck in your search!

[–] Deestan@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This platform would have to have all the same functions

This expectation comes from inertia, not need. No system, thing, or product can ever succeed at checking everyone's little boxes from another product in a satisfactory way.

Also both you and your friends are older, different people now. The old magic will not come back. Figure out what you actually actually need and find something new that will be good at that.

Facebook was new and confusing once. If you can face that again, you'll find beautiful things.

I agree. Im about the only person i know that digs into new and confusing things technologically, unfortunately. The rest are all just tired and want daddy zucc to do it for them.

[–] LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

My recommendation is to just stop using it and everyone else be damned.

You have 800 friends, do you actually talk to all 800 of them regularly? Are they actually friends or just people you kinda know who interact with you on Facebook?

I'd say text your actual friends or talk to them on whatever chat app you prefer, and ignore everyone else.

wait who owns this now? I had no idea the site was even up, haven't looked in many years

[–] Bruschetta@toast.ooo 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In June 2011, Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake jointly purchased the company for approximately $35 million.[16] On February 11, 2016, it was announced that Myspace and its parent company had been purchased by Time Inc. for $87 million.[17][18] On January 31, 2018, Time Inc. was in turn purchased by Meredith Corporation,[19] and later that year, on November 4, 2019, Meredith spun off Myspace and its original holding company (Viant Technology Holding Inc.) and sold it to Viant Technology LLC.[20]

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So do people actually use it or is it just a ruse now

[–] Bruschetta@toast.ooo 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yes, but not a lot. I’m guessing around 5 million? (I say guessing because I can’t remember where I read it). They don’t seem to have a mobile app anymore (they used to).

MySpace and Friendi.ca seem to be your best options.

Edit: With a group of 800, you might want to consider hosting your own instance to alleviate the confusion of which/where to go (Friendica). You don’t need to do it yourself, @communick.news “provides managed hosting” and save yourself a headache.

[–] early_riser@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My personal opinion: FB is bad not just because of who owns it or how it's operated. The very concept is harmful. I grew up in the 90s before the web existed. All the stupid stuff I did and said stays where it belongs, haunting my memories when I lie a wake at 3 AM. Now along comes social media. You over share your life, and it's all associated with your real name and real face and real phone number. It's all out there, forever, for everyone to see. No thanks.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 22 hours ago

I dont post on it except for community events. I haven't made a post in years

[–] finitebanjo@piefed.world 7 points 1 day ago

I think it's hard to find a platform that both requires all of your personal data and also doesn't reveal or sell your personal data.

[–] artiman@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

friendica is the best alternative but you don't want fediverse so look at this list https://alternativeto.net/software/facebook/

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ah yes i had forgot friendicia, I find it really confusing so that is a no go for normies.

[–] Flaqueman@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

So everything other than Facebook is a no-go? You were given 3 alternatives and categorically rejected them all. It'S cOnFusINg sO iT's A nO-Go. Well... Stay on FB then

[–] not_me@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dump your friends , and start again

[–] sk1nnym1ke@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sometimes friends are more important than a social network app.

[–] not_me@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

Choose your friends in real life, not on soc. Media
