I went to Belize around 20 years ago for my first ever dive trip.
Talking with other divers I found out they had recovered a body from the blue hole a week earlier. The head and hands had been eaten, but the body in the wetsuit was intact. They identified it based on the rented dive camera still attached to the person, it had been down there a few years.
We decided to stick to lower level dives on that trip.

I dived there last year! It was incredible. Long boat ride, though.

2.5 hours from Ambergris. I think you can stay close to Blue Hole if that's your main focus. The normal reefs around there are incredible too. We stayed in Ambergris because the barrier reef was unbelievable, and the boats pick you up from your hotel.
Went scuba diving there with my dad, the hole has Smurf figurines in it somewhere
