Face book is bad. But phone book is like database...

Less people have a landline and therefor a registered phone number, but its got lots of numbers for local businesses that might be super useful.

[–] idegenszavak@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think in the 18th century even less people had landlines...

Where was the peak? 90s probably? Many people were getting second lines for dial up.

Kind of crazy to think that such a significant technology as the telephone came and died in about 200 years. Just a blip in human history.

Global peak was around 2006, 2001 in the developed world:

In 2009, The Economist wrote "At current rates the last landline in America will be disconnected sometime in 2025."

That's wild. There are probably a lot less than we think. I'd bet most businesses are on VOIP now.

Good: book format

Bad: Kennedy assassination

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Worth the read, but it can get pretty boring in parts. Not gonna spoil anything though, would recommend the read

It must've been so cool to be able to tell people asking for your number to just get a phone book.

Did you really create this content?

[–] cr1cket@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Are you not content with my creation?

[–] Zwrt@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 months ago

Its harder to please a content dictator then it is to love them anyway.

[–] pieguy@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What is content?

Is content a reaction to the world around us?

Or is it art of eggs & beans?

Do we create content, or do we discover it as our content-tools do their work?

Is content within us, trying to get out? Or is it around us, and we put it together?

Is the nature of content elusive and complex? Or maybe content is simple?

Perhaps content is just that which makes us content.

Or does it explode.

Never identified that much with a character in a book

[–] cathfish@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Thank you for creating paradoxical content!

Maybe at some point it'll break the information system.

Definitely good. You can’t use Facebook to beat someone that owes you money without leaving any marks.

[–] Zwrt@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 months ago

Book both good and bad

Put one book in a museum with all names/numbers non destructively censored because its a historical record of data which is good.

Official record of bad things don't make the record a bad thing, the phone book doesn’t need to support or have an opinion about phones to tell you phones and there numbers exists and where to find them.

Then burn all the other copies because selling a centralised record of all that personal information is immoral, so book very bad after all.
