The teacher in this scene was played by Ben Stein, who was a speechwriter for both Nixon and Ford. His father also worked for Nixon as an economic advisor.

I want to argue against this point, but it's true that the quality of instructor can make the difference, plus any time I dare to sneak back on Facebook and see the posts from various high school classmates that I friended long ago... all I can say is not all of Gen-X are idiots, like any other grouping. But damn, some of them are.
