if only codeberg supports federation :(

I read this but I’m still not clear. What does it mean for a code repository hub to “support federation”? Like do you host your own project(s) on your own node/instance? But you still interact with users from other instances?

Yes. ForgeFed is an ActivityPub extension just for repository hubs like Forgejo.

For example someone on instance codeberg.org will be able to interact with repos hosted on instance gitea.angry.im.

You’ll be able to follow, fork, open PRs and tickets across federated forges. One day.

Alas, no word from fr33, lead dev of forgefed, for approaching a year [(well, since may 2025 iirc)]. He had moved to Israel/Palestine somewhere. The worst is feared/presumed. Very sad (~ doubly so for me, since I had considered offering him a place here, out of harms way). Hopefully others can continue to develop his masterpiece.

When we were first talking about making it (federated git hosting/forges), in the peers community on irc, I and others suggested keeping it as simple as possible. But fr33domlover, in full do-ocratic gusto got underway with a full fledged activitypub extension that would do all the things. Fondly remembered. Hopefully he resurfaces at some point... :/

I had hoped to contribute, but really horrible life stuff glomped me. My low programming aptitude does not make it easy to jump into. Again, hopefully others can continue to develop his masterpiece.

[Seeing all the haskell repos in codeberg.org/ForgeFed ...] Why oh why did I suggest Haskell... With something else, we could have been done already. ;)

  • Long live forgefed.
  • Long live forgejo.
  • Long live the federation.

Please do contribute, to this very "software in the public interest" set of projects.

Does the code/project get hosted on a single instance? Or that is also made available on other instances?

Git is already decentralized, but for now creating a mirror is a manual process if that is what you mean.
