Every winter it's the same. Plant the wheat/oats/ barley or whatever, express amazement at how fast it grows, then plant some all over a week or two later because it dies so fast.

I would settle for slower growth and longer life. Is there some secret to keeping this longer? I only have a west facing window to put it in. The east facing windows are shaded by a big tree.

Are you tray watering ever other day and giving it lots of light?

It gets plenty of water, but more light isn't an option.

You can supplement light with growing lights. Grass requires both moisture and light to be successful.

I tried that last winter. It made no difference. I can grow indoor plants, just not grass for some reason. If I could persuade them to nibble on phalenopsis orchids, I wouldn't need the grass.

Are you letting the substrate fully dry between waterings? It’s really easy to overwater and get fungal issues.

[–] Amuletta@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It doesn't live long enough for that.

[–] dgdft@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That’ll be your culprit then.

@Amuletta@lemmy.ca

There's a really neat YouTube channel, Kill This Plant who explains a lot of indoor plant stuff

~~He~~A different YouTuber had a video about buying potted basil from a grocery store, and how they are always overcrowded to make them look fuller to sell better

I've been growing indoor plants for decades. It's just cat grass that doesn't seem to work for me. Heck, I even got one of those grocery store orchids to bloom again every winter.
