The phone that I used for two factor authentication is dead. I have a new phone and i'm in the process of restoring everything.

Unfortunately, when it comes to pawb.social, i'm not gonna be able to disable 2FA because, to do so, i am asked for a 2FA code. Which i could get if my old phone was still working, but it isn't.

EDIT forgot to mention: at the time i set up 2FA on this account, i was not given backup codes. The text file where i store them just says "Lemmy: they didn't give me any". I don't remember what the circumstances were back then

The app i'm using is Aegis Authenticator.

I can still access this account because i never logged out of it on PC, but i'm building a new PC right now so i'll lose the account.

I'm not asking for anyone to disable it in the backend, that would be a security issue. Not sure what to do, honestly it's not that big a deal to delete the account and remake.

Of course it's great that this instance has 2FA in the first place, but then this issue arises.

I searched this c/ for this topic and it looks like i'm the first to raise this.

Thanks for everything you guys do

It's too late for that now, you can start over from scratch.

  1. From now on, set up an auto backup with Aegis.

  2. If possible, synchronize it across any number of trusted devices (with tools like syncthing, ...)

  3. Don't ever get caught in this mess again

Yeah i've finished restoring my codes. I didn't know Aegis had this auto backup feature, seems a bit of a security hazard, but it's not like the FBI is after me or anything

2 is where the trouble starts. I haven't found a way to properly back up my phone because many (most) parts of the folder structure are not accessible to apps. I can backup the contents of the Downloads or Music folders, but that's not where the notes app stores notes for example, nor is it where the audio recorder app stores recordings. So most of the data that i actually want backed up is inaccessible.

Google's backups have also failed me in this case, oddly enough.

That's an Android issue, and sadly the alternative mobile OSs aren't as viable as Linux is to desktops

It's been a while, but I imagine dumping Android file system via adb still works.

This is my first time hearing about this. I'll see if this is a viable option.

Thanks!
