I hear you, but I think state-run liquor stores are just a holdover from Prohibition mentality, not to make sure booze is affordable for the poor.

Oh I agree, and I love Mamdani's ideas. I just think state-run liquor stores aren't a great parallel because they come with issues food stores don't.

I'm from the US so I don't understand what issues might be there if govt operates food stores?

I think that were 2 statements: "state run liquor stores come with issues" - "food stores don't have those issues, therefore bad parallel"

It's the other way around - government run liquor stores started after Prohibition to make sure liquor laws keeping booze away from minors were enforced properly. Food stores don't have that issue. And we're talking about NYC.
