I haven't actually seen Tron: Legacy, but I assume the film cannot possibly be as good as the Daft Punk album it came with.

[–] sudoMakeUser@sh.itjust.works 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's not. It's a subpar plot and some questionable acting carried by gorgeous visuals and a stellar soundtrack.

It's still my favourite movie of all time, but the soundtrack is stil better.

carried by gorgeous visuals

She sure did.

Where else can you see Jeff bridges fighting Jeff bridges on a bridge?

Good point on the Bridges Bridges bridge fight, MajorMajormajormajor.

Honestly, Tron: Legacy is not that bad compared to Tron: Ares, which I was going to write down before I saw your comment.

Is that the current state of film sequels? The sequel from ten to twenty years ago that we all thought was bad is not nearly as bad as the latest sequel, what has happened to films?!

[–] missingno@fedia.io 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I haven't seen that one either, but I'll assume it's worse purely on the basis of not having Daft Punk.

it does have Nine Inch Nails though and Trent has done some phenomenal soundtrack work (though obviously not comparable to daft punk)

Tron: Ares was not that bad either. The visuals were a clear upgrade from Tron: Legacy and a handful of clips I've seen from the original Tron movie. You can notice that that they put a lot of details in places like Ares' HUD, consoles, the proprietary 3D printer and the virtual red-coloured world whose name I can't remember right now.

The soundtrack does complement the movie, although I noticed that they repeated certain "melodies" across the movie more than I would've liked. It's obviously not at par with Daft Punk but it resembles the spirit of the Tron franchise.

The plot is a real rollercoaster in terms of quality and believability. The backstory and plot of the main protagonists feel solid and so is the interaction between each other. Somehow Jared Leto decently fits the role of Ares and his dialogues don't feel out of place or cringey. On the other hand, the story gives too much power to the antagonist to the point that it clearly feels unfair. Also some action scenes feel like they're happening just because they have to, and probably give material for the trailers to give the viewers something to look forward to while watching the movie.

If you have no qualms with the involvement of Jared Leto, I would recommend that you give this movie a try. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it's surprisingly well made for a movie that that considered a flop by the users at Lemmy.

Those "repeated certain melodies across the movie" have a name. It's called a theme and is something that's pretty common in movies, opera, musicals, symphonies, etc. An entire work can have a theme that is modified, built upon, expanded or changed as the narrative progresses. Individual characters or places can have their own unique themes. Daft Punk's entire style is built on repetition, so it should be no surprise that their musical score work would highlight that.

[–] Feddinat0r@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago
