- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Thinking billionaires deserve to be shot. Thinking liberals are cringe. Thinking there is no difference between state and non state violence
I would agree that there is no real difference between state & non-state violence, aside from public perception, the additional liability protections that states grant themselves, & stuff like that. However, I probably have the "wrong" opinion about murder & shooting billionaires on Lemmy. I happen to oppose killing billionaires simply because they are billionaires. I don't support murder, & I don't think being a billionaire is a reason for someone to be murdered. Maybe if I were trying to impress a socialist girl, I could pretend to have that opinion. But I'm a terrible actor & an even worse liar, so that's not really my thing.
P.S. I could also just be wrong, & maybe your opinion (about the murder stuff) is actually the correct one. I don't know. If that's the case, then there's definitely something I'm missing.
I never said it was my opinion. I feel no sympathy for them or outrage at them being a target for violence, but I try not to get hung up on what people "deserve." They shouldn't have the power they wield, and if killing them is the best way to take it from them, then I'm all for it.
However, it is the system of capitalism that is responsible for their position, and killing a few of them will not change the system. It might be effective terrorism for them to feel like their lives are in danger unless throw us a bone, but it could easily garner them more sympathy or get them to double down on oppression. In order for capitalism to change, masses of people need to be willing to radically change it.
Your position is the same as being pro-murder, but articulated in a more passive voice. In my opinion, you should be allowed to hold this view & should not be censored for expressing it. I think the best way for socialists to gain power over nationalists or liberals is to strike when these groups are occupied with other conflicts, much like the Chinese Communists did with the Chinese Nationalists when they were occupied & weakened by the Japanese, or to render the nationalist system unworkable. Socialist/communist/etc takeover could be achieved by promoting policies that suppress native population growth while importing foreigners, or by accumulating unsustainable compounding debt through welfare programs & war, all while the native population fails to grow & develop its economy enough to compensate (the democratic socialists' policies, such as rent freezes & numerous regulations for providing healthcare, can kill potential growth via restricting supply). I believe the new democratic socialists in the USA are effectively taking power, largely because no one likes their main rival, the nationalists, who are, by all accounts, thoroughly infiltrated by Zionists.
Now, the question is whether the window of opportunity for the communists or socialists exists through the democratic socialism movement. All you would need to do would be to water down the phrasing (like you did with your murder opinion) & express the truth that the nationalists have been infiltrated by the Zionists.
