The other two answers are spot on, so all I can add is how annoyed I get when sportscasters says someone is defying gravity. There are not, in fact, the parabolic arcs that skaters and snowboarders travel are defining gravity, not defying it. Hang time is a myth, 32 feet per second squared isn't just a good idea, it's the law.
You're just looking at it from the wrong angle. Every time you stand up instead of falling down, you're 'defying gravity'. Gravity still affects you, of course, but you're fighting against it.
Like a swimmer in a river swimming upstream is 'defying' the flow. The flow still affects them, but they're fighting against it.
So anytime you assume an upright position instead of letting gravity have its way with you (and especially when you climb or jump upwards), you're defying gravity.
Had never looked at it that way, I guess I'm thinking back on some people who were convinced that by moving his arms and legs in the air Jordan was able to counter gravity, increasing his "hang time".
Good, I can now watch the Olympics and Xgames with less annoyance.
