A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don't control.

Rules:

  1. Be civil: we're here to support and learn from one another. Insults won't be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon.

  2. No spam posting.

  3. Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it's not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear.

  4. Don't duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click.

  5. Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda).

  6. No trolling.

  7. No low-effort posts. This is subjective and will largely be determined by the community member reports.

I’m a software engineer as well, and it’s not the complexity that is the challenge - it’s the fact that most tvs can’t run VPNs, and having people have to connect to your vpn to stream media just means they will never stream your media.

Can't you just open the URL in a web browser tho?

Most TVs don't have web browsers lol. And again - without a VPN you can't just stream it through a web browser.

I've been doing a bit more research and it looks like the way to go is jellyfin + a cloudflare DNS tunnel. Also there appears to be a native jellyfin app on most Android TVs available. So, no, VPN or a web browser is not required at all

Most TVs aren’t Android TVs lol.

Cloudflare Tunnel limit content delivery networks. In other words, they will probably suspend the service when people try to start streaming or even the use of apps like Immich if used for video uploads/downloads. I think they have something called Claudflare Stream for video.
