libertarianism
About us
An open, user owned community for the general disscussion of the libertarian philosophy.
- Libertarianism is the belief that each person has the right to live his life as he chooses so long as he respects the equal rights of others.
- Libertarians defend each person’s right to life, liberty, and property.
- In the libertarian view, voluntary agreement is the gold standard of human relationships.
- If there is no good reason to forbid something (a good reason being that it violates the rights of others), it should be allowed.
- Force should be reserved for prohibiting or punishing those who themselves use force.
Most people live their own lives by that code of ethics. Libertarians believe that that code should be applied consistently, even to the actions of governments, which should be restricted to protecting people from violations of their rights. Governments should not use their powers to censor speech, conscript the young, prohibit voluntary exchanges, steal or “redistribute” property, or interfere in the lives of individuals who are otherwise minding their own business.

Well, we have no minimum wage in New Hampshire, and have repeatedly voted down one when proposed by the Democrats. I think we are on the same page.
It's not about minimum wage. It's about whether you let a closed system work as intended. I can tell by your initial comments that you are a Dem hater and will pick any of their more obvious incursions into your freedoms as a reason that only the GOP can save you. Where I really question your assessment on this is that the GOP present you with a freedom that will work just as long as you don't interfere with their plans. Unfortunately their plans are to own you and all manner of your existence. By the time you see the forest through the trees it will be too late to have any freedom at all. The Dems on the other hand want to implement controls that actually provide you with the freedom to live a happy and healthy life, and does not allow for discrimination against anyone. Now you may say that you should have the right to discriminate (is that true?), but in doing so you are infringing on the right of that other person to live happily in your libertarian society. Or perhaps you believe that in this society that person being infringed could take matters into there own hands (kill you or take you to court?). Is that the freedom you seek?
I can't keep using conservative vs. liberal or GOP vs. Dem as this continues because neither is the solution to any of our problems. What I can tell you is that there are a large number of people who believe in the survival of the fittest who would not have your freedom in their plans. There are also a large number of people that believe everyone should have a right to a happy healthy life and want guardrails put up to make that as fair as possible. They are the ones who will have the longer term prospect of being led to your promised land. The path you promote in this post will absolutely lead to you destruction.
I think your comment is referring to crony capitalism, right? You will be happy to know that Libertarians oppose all bailouts. Businesses should succeed or fail based upon their efforts, not government intervention.
There is an effort popularized by Congressman Ron Paul, arguably the Godfather of modern libertarianism, to end the Federal Reserve bank, which uses various financial levers to manipulate the economy. Most libertarians oppose this type of intervention. They support the previous gold standard, where all US money was backed by gold.
Many of our people in New Hampshire own gold and/or use it to barter. They see Bitcoin as another asset free of government manipulation as well.
Final note -- I wouldn't call myself a "hater" of any group. Even though we all disagree, we all want what is best for our society. I may disagree with the policies of Democrats or Republicans, but I respect them and agree to disagree 🙂
That's exactly what I find so unfortunate. Most people assume 'free markets' automatically mean the system we have now: crony capitalism. It seems like people here have a deep-seated hatred for free markets, but just to be clear, saying this doesn't make me an AnCap.
