Buckethead - Pike 151 - Fog Garden [Rock Instrumental]

A thirty-one-minute pike with four-tracks. It's mostly rock that gets heavier as it goes along.

The first track is experimental rock with high distortion guitar and an alternative percussion style. The second drops the distortion for a solo-style guitar.

The last two tracks get a bit heavier and feature a more mainstream sound with crazy solos. These two tracks were the pearl and they go by so quick.

The next Bandcamp Friday is coming up and I like to look for new and interesting bands. Would love to hear about lemming artists, or even some favorites I've probably never heard of.

To add to the discussion, here are a few of my favs:

• Sincere Engineer Found them on a random fluke and they quickly became a new favorite. Garage band style with just a great sound. A bit moody, but still high energy with really satisfying lyrics. They've got a new album that I plan to pick up myself.

• Gunship Fairly well known, I think, but I picked up Unicorn shortly after it was released and listen to it front to back regularly. One of the few synthwave albums I actually enjoy. The ripping sax solos on pretty much every track certainly help.

• aivi & surasshu A married duo that is probably most well known for their work on Steven Universe (that's how I found out about them). Their most recent album Meanwhile is such a wonderful mix of digital and acoustic. Very soothing melodies without lyrics. It always puts me in a pleasant mood.

Our continent has a long tradition of preserving and sharing knowledge through oral literature—songs, proverbs, and legends. During the colonial era, foreign researchers, institutions and labels recorded African musical heritage and took them away. Today, many of these sound recordings remain caged in museums abroad or locked behind academic paywalls, accessible only to researchers and those who can afford them.

To access the 14,000 recordings held by the African Music Archive, for example, you still need to travel to Mainz, Germany. Meanwhile, the International Library of African Music (ILAM), founded in South Africa in 1954 by ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey, has only recently begun digitizing parts of its vast collection and making them available online.

The question remains: who gets to access African cultural memory?

Kenyan sound artist KMRU explored this question in his 2023 album Temporary Stored. Blending sound synthesizers, field recordings, and archival recordings from the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Belgium, the project liberates these stolen sounds from the colonial archive.

Today, African creatives and organizations are increasingly taking music preservation into their own hands. Empowered with digital technology, recording equipment, and online platforms, they are documenting traditional music, digitizing historical recordings, and creating new archives that are finally accessible to African audiences. Why does accessibility matter? Because preservation without access is still exclusion. Accessible archives help us reclaim culture, challenge colonial interpretations, and ensure African artists are the ones telling their own stories.

Buckethead - Pike 235 - Oneiric Pool [Rock Instrumental]

A twenty-nine-minute, single-song in seven-tracks. It builds from a softer rock into a harder rock as it goes along.

I thought it to be a very enjoyable song despite it being lighter than I usually prefer. Very nice melody and arrangement. What it lacked in heavy it made up for with quality. There's a lot of emotion behind this piece and it comes through.

one of my favourite hardcore bands in high school. honestly it still holds up. :3

Buckethead - The Cellar Yawns [Rock/Metal Instrumental]

This is the title track (track four) from Pike 154 - The Cellar Yawns. A ten-minute ultra-aggressive, metal-laden masterpiece.

The rest of the pike was more of a soft to hard rock blend that I did not enjoy as much as this song. It has that 'The Boiling Pond (Pike 016)' angry sternness about it.

I've put a YouTube link in the URL with a timestamp. The song in question has lyrics talking about "[inheriting a] troubled land" or something like that. It's clearly a sampling of some recording. When I first put this into a search engine, I got religious results. Now I don't get anything. Does anyone know what the lyrics mean?

Buckethead - Pike 232 - Lightboard [Rock/Metal Instrumental]

A thirty-minute, three-track pike with an aggressive hard rock/metal sound. Track 01 features five-minutes of growling and a quarter hour guitar solo. Track 02 is same-ish but slightly heavier from the bassier, and track 03 has some experimental rounding off the metal edge.

A very well made pike. The Lightboard (Track 01) solo is truly awesome. The speed at which he plays is exhausting for me to listen to. Most impressive. Track 02 was great as well. It's only problem was that it had to follow track 01. I didn't care for the experimental on track 03. It was too much.

Fear Factory - Martyr (American Industrial Metal)

'Martyr' is the first track from their first album 'Soul Of A New Machine'. Link goes to album playlist.

This is a song that thirty years ago just hauled off and shoved a young and impressionable jay2 down the path to metal. I hope you enjoy it as much as I still do.

Buckethead - Pike 026 - Worms For The Garden [Rock/Metal Instrumental]

A thirty-minute pike with five tracks of heavy hard rock. One of his heavier offerings among all of the pikes.

Track 01 (title track) is a long aggressive guitar solo while the remainder is a slower, bassier and grungier kind of awesome. Really good pike from tip to tip.

Buckethead - Pike 040 - Coat Of Charms [Rock Instrumental]

A thirty-minute pike that starts off mellow before slipping into gear.

Track 01 was ok and quick. Track 02 was too mellow for my taste. But then! Oh then.

The remainder of the pike is the softer song 'Jettison' in six parts, and it is really the star of the show here. It switches between a soft and hard rock sound many times but remains very emotional throughout.

One of his better works quality wise. This song meant something to him.

This is a pretty significant release for Mastodon - it showcases some significant changes in sound from previous albums and it's some of the first new music they're released featuring their new guitarist Nick Johnston. Also it's got a keyboard solo...

The video also goes alongside their announcement of a new album dropping on August 28th, which I'm beyond stoked for.

Buckethead - Pike 153 - Whisper Track [Rock/Metal Instrumental]

Thirty-two minutes and four tracks of heavy rock with minor elements of experimental and metal peppered in. It starts chaotic but gains structure as it goes along.

A really enjoyably heavy pike. Great music while I packed for the woods. It has a nice energetic beat with some great guitar. I found myself headbanging more than not. Track 3 gets more experimentally 'buzzy' than I prefer, but the others have a more mainstream crisp hard rock sound.

Buckethead - Pike 146 - Carrotcature [Rock/Funk Instrumental]

A twenty-nine-minute, eight-track pike that feels like a hundred sixteen-second track snippets. Heavy rock and heavy funk throughout, but with a micro-morphing effect that kicks in every sixteen seconds. It's musical loss is made up for with a raw carnage, but is a bit frustrating when a great sound goes away.

A really enjoyable blast of unique and heavy sonics. Lot's of fantastic sixteen-second moments here in a wide range and mixture ratio of sounds for varied results, all mostly hits but some not so much. It's also noteworthy that this is some of the heaviest funk I've heard from Mr. Bucket. I would love to see some of these moments extended into full blown songs.

Buckethead - Pike 144 - Scream Sundae [Rock Instrumental]

A thirty-minute, three-track pike of aggressive hard rock with elements of experimental.

Pretty good ride even if it's not as heavy as I prefer. This pike is reminiscent of my number one favorite, The Shores Of Molokai (Pike 007).

The playstyle is fast, fun and feisty. It has alternative percussions throughout. Track 3 got a bit too liberal with the experimental for my taste eventually.

Barry Michels And Buckethead - Turning and Turning [Mellow/Ambient Guitar]

A very provocative 'barely a song' that hits more like a gut punch. Very impactful and haunting lyrics I don't like to consider.

Barry Michels is Bucketheads therapist. He's providing the spoken word lyrics in front of the ambient slow melodic guitar. It left me feeling unsettled.

Buckethead - Pike 641 - Rooster Eats Its Beak To Tame Itself [Rock/Metal Instrumental]

A twenty-nine minute, three-track pike arranged for a very technical play style. It's largely metal with an unstructured and chaotic solo-style lead guitar.

It has nice quality sonics. Track 1 takes the win with its ultra-aggressive style while track 2 is a bit milder. Track 3 is more middle-grounded but has a bit of experimental effects on it.

Buckethead - Pike 562 - Blue Dunes [Rock/Melodic Instrumental]

A one-track, sixteen minute pike. It's a pretty mellow backing track with a great unstructured wailing guitar solo.

I don't usually bite at the melodic, but this one was pretty good musically.
