For couple of hours browsing New/All the feed is filled with spambots advertising porn on a very shady domains. Lemmy doesn't seem to have option to report users so I've been just blocking them (there's not THAT many to block after all) but that got me thinking what would be the best way to report spam accounts and how reporting posts actually work.

If I report a post on sopuli does the notification go to admins at spammers home instance since I don't think sopuli admins can do much for individual users on other host? And if there's any tools (existing or planned) which would help with situations like this?

Sopuli was upgraded to Lemmy’s version 0.18.3 that was released several hours ago. The instance was down several minutes but otherwise the upgrade went well.

My feed is currently being flooded with r/place spam that I could easily hide with a content filter like I did on reddit. Would be really nice to get this feature on the blocked-page.

A reply was made to this post that can bee seen when viewed from lemmy .world : https://lemmy.world/post/1354014 , but not when viewed through sopuli.xyz : https://sopuli.xyz/post/1218178 and I did not receive a notification of this.

I also noticed that a number of this users posts were missing when viewed from sopuli.xyz : https://sopuli.xyz/u/[email protected] they can be seen when viewed from lemmy.world : https://lemmy.world/u/setsneedtofeed .

I have notified the [email protected] and he is contacting the admins at lemmy.world and I thought I should do the same with sopuli.xyz as I have no idea where the problem is occurring.

Tykästyin käyttämään Lemmyä wefwef-nimisen web-sovelluksen kautta. Nyt vaihdoin puhelinta, mutta WefWef ei annakaan enää kirjautua sisään Sopulin instanssin. Herjaa vaan virheestä ja käskee yrittämään uudestaan.

I always missing posts published on my communities as I almost never notice them in my home feed.

I want to receive a notification each time a new post is available on a community I moderate, even via RSS if not possible on the main interface.

During the last few days several Lemmy instances such as Lemmy.world and lemmy.blahaj.zone have come victims of hacking. This hacking happened by exploiting an XSS vulnerability enabled by custom emojis set by an instance. This way the admins' cookies could be captured. A good recap of the incident has been made here.

This vulnerability doesn't concern Sopuli, as we have not enabled our own emojis. Custom emojis set by an instance don't federate with other instances. Even after this incident it may take longer time to enable those. In case you are wondering why you had to login again, I replaced the JWT secret used by the instance with a new one just in case.

Muutaman viime päivän aikana muutamat Lemmy-instanssit kuten Lemmy.world ja lemmy.blahaj.zone ovat joutuneet hakkeroinnin uhreiksi. Tämä hakkerointi tapahtui hyödyntämällä instanssin omien emojien mahdollistamaa XSS-haavoittuvuutta. Näin ylläpitäjien evästeet saatiin haltuun. Tapauksesta on tehty hyvä tiivistys täällä.

Tämä haavoittuvuus ei koske Sopulia, koska emme ole ottaneet käyttöön omia emojeja. Instanssin itse asettamat emojit eivät federoidu muiden instanssien kanssa. Tämän tapauksen jälkeenkin niiden käyttöönotossa saattaa kestää pidemmän aikaa. Jos ihmettelette, miksi joudutte kirjautumaan uudestaan, korvasin instanssin käyttämän JWT-käyttöoikeustietueen varuilta uudella.

Now with all the discussion going on about Facebook joining the fediverse and what to do about it many people seem to be advocating for defederating with them thinking that they're going to grab all your data and this is the only way to stop them.

I'm not especially educated on the subject but my understanding is that this is not at all what defederating does and also I don't think that's going to stop them from getting the little data that's here publicly available for anyone anyways.

I'm trying to get my head around the entire concept of the fediverse but it seems like there's very few people who actually understand how it works and these people seem entirely absent in these popular threads I'm reading.

I know that's the talk of the minute and the rest of Lemmy is bombarded with arguments about whether to defederate from threads or not.

I'm not looking to start the debates here as well but I'm just curious on our beloved admin's stance about it, are we going to allow federation with threads?

Hi, I hope this is the right place. I have successfully subscribed to some remote communities, but now whenever I view a remote community there's no "Subscribe" button I can click but instead just plain text saying "Subscribe", like the button is disabled or something.

Does anyone know why that's happening and what I should do to subscribe to more remote / federated communities?

As devops/infra guy, few technical things sprang into mind:

• are there any (hw) redundancies at server side?
• what happens if current admin gets hit by a bus?
• if instance dies permanently, what happens to its users and posts?
• is the vps virtual or real?
• if the vps is compromised or something explodes, are there any off-site backups?

All this post talks about is on going to an instance on your android favorite browser (mines Mull), click on 3 dots (options) and install/add to home screen, so the instance will show in webview/webapp version

For some reason, when trying to use webview version of sopuli, the wv crashes instantly, but, at lemmy.world or lemmy.ml for example it works flawlessly. Any idea why can it be?

Well, whew again! The influx of new users into Sopuli surprised not only me, but also Hetzner's VPS. The disk space ran out fast, and Sopuli was down today for many hours because of this. I was busy with work, which didn't help with the issue.

I bought extra disk space from Hetzner, and the founder of brand new Lemmy instance https://lemmy.world/ [email protected] helped to use it on the VPS. Really big thanks for him! Apologies to both new and old users, hopefully this will not happen again. Happy weekend, everyone!

Edit 03.06.2023: Now there is 80 GB of extra disk space for Sopuli, apparently 40 wasn't enough. In addition to extra space I also bought peace of mind. Sopuli was again offline but no more!

Well, whew! As a result of Reddit's recent spark of genius, the number of users looking for a new home has been growing at quite a brisk pace. In the last 12 hours, over 30 new membership applications were received. This has never happened before in Sopuli's short history. It's a bit like what happened to Mastodon when Twitter had its own spark of genius. I'm surprised and also excited.

No huh huh! Redditin viimeaikaisten neronleimauksien seurauksena uutta kotia etsiviä käyttäjiä on tullut varsin reippaalla tahdilla. Viimeisen 12 tunnin aikana tuli yli 30 uutta käyttäjähakemusta. Tällaista ei ole Sopulin lyhyen historian aikana tapahtunut aiemmin. Tämä on vähän sama asia kuin mitä vuorostaan Mastodonille kävi Twitterin neronleimausten takia. Olen yllättynyt ja myös innostunut.

In the settings interface, on the "Sort Type" box, there's a question mark one can click to explain the different sort modes. It leads to a 404 page. I think the actual page it should lead to is HERE. Sorry if this isn't the correct place to post this.

Sopuli was down today because of my own mishaps and a resulting database problem. In the evening I started to fix the problems, and at the same time I updated Sopuli to Lemmy's version 0.17.2. Everything should be alright now, even though my favorite theme i386 isn't anymore among selectable themes.

In addition to software update, Sopuli's logo was also updated to a newer and finer one. I did the original logo in 15 minutes on MS Paint, so the difference between the new one is like night and day. The new logo has been made for us by William Rudi (https://www.twitch.tv/willywonka_hc/, https://www.artstation.com/williamrudi ).

Membership applications have been turned on for this instance. When the feature was brought to Lemmy and many instances turned it on, I decided to watch the situation in case Sopuli turns into a kind of safe haven for trolls and spammers. Such case hasn't happened, at least with trolls and spammers suddenly registering en masse and wrecking havoc; regardless I turned membership applications on just in case.

Jäsenyyshakemukset on otettu käyttöön tällä instanssilla. Kun ominaisuus tuotiin Lemmyyn ja monet instanssit ottivat sen käyttöön, päätin tarkkailla tilannetta siltä varalta että Sopulista tulee jonkinlainen turvasatama trolleille ja roskapostittajille.
