I was walking along the road with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. - Edvard Munch

People who hate what I make hate me, too. They must think I am a demon or some kind of evil sorcerer. Those who understand what I do appreciate the determination, love, and courage it takes to find wonder and beauty in people who are considered by society to be damaged, unclean, dysfunctional, or wretched. - Joel-Peter Witkin

It happened on a Sunday when my mother was escorting my twin brother and me down the steps of the tenement where we lived. We were going to church. While walking down the hallway to the entrance of the building, we heard an incredible crash mixed with screaming and cries for help. The accident involved three cars, all with families in them. Somehow, in the confusion, I was no longer holding my mother's hand. At the place where I stood at the curb, I could see something rolling from one of the overturned cars. It stopped at the curb where I stood. It was the head of a little girl. I bent down to touch the face, to speak to it – but before I could touch it someone carried me away - Joel-Peter Witkin

The Kidnap Years: The Astonishing True History of the Forgotten Kidnapping Epidemic That Shook Depression-Era America. Rules for thee and not me. That song sounds like. I heard it a long long time ago. It got layers and sometimes in the inverse. Just pulling levers to get it to work. Peaks and valleys. The exponential function to nowhere.

Edgar-winner Stout (Carolina Skeletons) makes his nonfiction debut with a thrilling account that puts the 1932 Lindbergh baby kidnapping case, billed as “the crime of the century,” in the context of the thousands of other kidnappings that occurred in the U.S. during the Prohibition and Depression eras. The kidnappers were often gangsters and bootleggers, and relatives sometimes turned to the local mob for help in freeing the victims. Even Charles Lindbergh, early in the investigation into his son’s kidnapping, asked gangsters for help. But even after Lindbergh paid the ransom, the baby’s body was found by the side of the road with a fractured skull and four years passed Richard Hauptmann was tried and executed for the crime, though he denied any involvement. Other horrific outcomes include the case of a 12-year-old California girl who was kidnapped in 1927 and whose body was returned to her parents in pieces after the ransom was paid. Some kidnappings had much better outcomes, such as that of banker August Luer, who was released unharmed after his kidnappers got tired of taking care of him. Dialogue taken from the printed news reports of the time heightens the drama. This collection of kidnapping stories anchored by the Lindbergh case will enthrall true crime fans. He acknowledged during cross-examination that he knew the girls were in a hot trailer for hours and the ventilation wasn’t good, but downplayed the conditions.

A 64-year-old grandmother accused of poisoning family in murder-suicide

The John S. Moore Homes are quiet as the crime scene at the Harris Avenue apartments has transitioned into clean-up. CBS6's Anthony Krolikowski went back to the neighborhood to ask residents about the family after new information came in from the police department.

Parents living in the complex were almost in tears when told about the latest details in the investigation. A family of six, two adults and four children, found dead.

Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt said a note found at 64-year-old Amy Steadman’s apartment led to the grandmother being the suspect. Neighbors did not want to go on camera but described Steadman as friendly to other children and was known to walk around the complex at a slow pace.

One of the children’s autopsies has come back with the cause of death listed as fatal sharp force injury. Evidence inside the apartment points to intentional poisoning. Prescription and over-the-counter medications were found.
