Personally, Last shift (2014).

Not meant movies get under my skin but that one really did.

This season, join us as we explore the darker side of storytelling at DFF 2025. • Primate (a slasher blending family, comedy, and chimpanzee carnage)

  • Dead Man's Wire (a crime thriller based on true events from the late 1970s starring Bill Skarsgård)

  • A Knock in the Dark (a short animated horror film directed by Estee Fox)

Thanksgiving arrives next week, bringing with it the stressful chaos of the holidays and rewatches of holiday horror staples like Blood Rage and Thanksgiving. Despite the horror that the holidays can inspire, it’s a rather niche subgenre when it comes to Thanksgiving. If you’re already tired of the handful of classics or not feeling the holidays this year, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to Thanksgiving-set horror movies that barely bother with the holidays at all. These titles take place on or around Thanksgiving, but quickly become too preoccupied with the terror to worry much about holiday tradition or theming.

  • Black Friday

  • The Boneyard

  • Deadly Friend

  • Escape Room

  • The Stepfather

  • Thanksgiving (2023)

  • Blood Freak (1972)

  • Blood Rage (1987)

  • Home Sweet Home (1981)

  • ThanksKilling (2008)

  • Kristy (2014)

I just finished this movie and thought it was fantastic. This is a more classic haunting horror film, with a great slow burn build up that actually made me feel scared, which is generally pretty rare.

Initially I had low expectations, initially the chemistry of the actors wasn't great, but once I got into the movie it blew me away, like 8/10 for sure. Probably the best horror movie I've seen in a long time.

I made the mistake of reading the reviews and it's a freaking 5/10 on IMDB, which surprised and bothered me. I would definitely recommend this one.

So, have you seen this one, what did you think?

Written and directed by Chris Nash, In A Violent Nature is a microbudget slasher with a clever premise: It’s told from the perspective of its undead villain. Awakened by some careless teens, local urban legend Johnny (Ry Barrett) proceeds to chase and murder them across the wooded American back country. That’s pretty much the entire plot, and it rules.

I am a big fan of the VHS series and found footage in general. The anthologies are generally uneven, with some mid to shit level short stories, some solid releases and some masterpieces.

My favourite in the series are probably V/H/S/85 and V/H/S/94. I loved "Terror" from 94 about the separatist rednecks. 85 had an awesome wrap-around series with Rory, but "Dreamkill" was the star of the show (creepy atmosphere, interesting build up and cool ending that leverages the concept of the story).

That being said many of the other releases have stand out episodes.

  • "Second Honeymoon" in V/H/S (the weird honeymoon short in the original)
  • "Safe Haven" in V/H/S/2 (the Indonesian cult)
  • "Stowaway" in V/H/S/Beyond (I found the ending of this episode to be genuinely scary)
  • "Ozzy's Dungeon" in V/H/S/99 (nice style)

V/H/S/Halloween is probably the first VHS release that didn't really have anything to offer all in all (V/H/S: Viral was also rather unimpressive though).

I didn't find the wrap around series in Halloween entertaining/good in any way. Felt like a much shittier version of the Rory story from 85.

"Coochie Coochie Coo" - This was OK, it wasn't bad, but nothing stood out.

"Ut Supra Sic Infra" - I was expecting a lot more considering this was made by Paco Plaza of REC and Verónica fame. It had potential and I liked the setting. The execution was dull and predictable.

"Fun Size" - I've seen a lot of reviews mention that this was their favourite. It might be my own biases (I generally don't like horror x comedy hybrids, with some notable exceptions) but I didn't find this one entertaining.

"Kidprint" - I think this piece had the most potential, but the setting, exposition and "tension dynamic" needed a longer build-up. Everything went a bit too fast. This would be a great candidate for a full movie.

"Home Haunt" - I enjoyed the start of this one, but like with "Fun Size", I didn't think the comedic elements were all that well done.

I don't mind gore, but the execution of the gore scenes in Halloween felt contrived. Too many of the short stories felt like they were trying too hard to be edgy. The wrap-around piece was by far the worst of all VHS series.

I will add it to my collection, purely as a fan of found footage, but this is one release that I am not going to go back to for another 5-10 years.
