Hiding comments from blocked users on Steam forums with Ublock Origin

#Steam #Forums #deshittification

Steam has a similar problem as Discord, where comments from someone you blocked appear as a collapsed comment with an alluring "show" button, tempting the user into seeing, maybe out of anxiety or curiosity, triggering contents. This could lead to some unpleasant situations that blocking itself should already solve.

Luckily, Steam's forums have a relatively simple code, and Valve doesn't update their platform's UI every other month ~~unlike Patreon~~, so if browsing the place on a browser with Ublock Origin, or with some other tool that supports UBO's custom filter system, the following filter should suffice for a decent while:

steamcommunity.com##div[id^="deleted_comment_"]

Explaining, the filter checks any id element that starts (^=) with deleted_comment_ (how comments from blocked users are tagged) in a given div code block.

Since, as far as I'm aware, the combination <div id="deleted_comment_(whatever)" (whatever)> doesn't appear anywhere else, it shouldn't cause any conflicts. But in case it does and the results are undesired, the following filter should check only for comments in discussion pages:

steamcommunity.com##:matches-path(/^\/app\/[^\/]+\/discussions\/[^\/]+\/[^\/]+/) div[id^="deleted_comment_"]

(And I swear I lose some days of my life span every time I have to deal with regex...)

Yet to dig other cases, but hope it helps already!

Newgrounds somehow still lives, and besides microblogging, it also has a BBS forum

https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs

BBS = Bulletin Board System, a type of #forums

Been using #Newgrounds mainly for the videos' RSS feeds from the microblogging side, but going through a backlog of links, I just noticed the recurring /bbs links are actually forum pages "<.<

Libretro/Retroarch forum

https://forums.libretro.com/

One for the #emulation folks. Wasn't aware the #Libretro team had a forum and had it shown to me elsewhere. Also has some sections about #Retroarch specifically, and digging around, it seems to have #RSS support too. =)

Been some months already iirc.

Also has #RSS for those that don't want to pin a tab just for it. 🙂

Rather long post, if not rambly, but it sounds to me as Hata trying to spin a better light while still being apologetic. He also explains the reason of his absence which led the place into slowing almost to a halt.

Hopefully it works out.

Thought it was worth sharing, as there wasn't anything saying upfront that's the case and the warning only appears after trying to submit the registration form.

...now I wonder I have any email account other than Protonmail or (shivers) Google's
