Calendar and files are now out via izzyondroid. That makes gallery, files, and calendar now out.

I hope this question is allowed here (since it is one of the search engines that i now use instead of google). I'm trying out Kagi. For the trial, you get to have 100 free searches, i belief. Is there a way to see how many searches i used up? I can only find stats for Kagi, not for my personal stats. How do you all like Kagi? And if so, do you pay for it? I'm considering paying, but i would like to have some insight into how many searches i actually perform on average in a month time. I honestly have no idea. What i also do lately is ask a question to a LLM (i found Petal), so that i have a start on where to search for more precisely. Sometimes, i get incorrect answers, but often it helps me get more of a handle on what i should be looking for when using a search engine. For example, i switched to Linux and Petal helps me understand some things better, which i can then use to do a more precise search.

PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.

Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform : With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.

If you are curious about PeerTube, I can't recommend you enough to check the official website to learn more about the project. If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.

The development of PeerTube is actually sponsored by Framasoft, a french non-for-profit popular educational organization, a group of friends convinced that an emancipating digital world is possible, convinced that it will arise through actual actions on real world and online with and for you!

Framasoft is also involved in the development of Mobilizon, a decentralized and federated alternative to Facebook Events and Meetup.

If you want to contribute to PeerTube, feel free to:

I'm looking for something that can replace Google Photos. I found out about Ente through F-Droid, and based on what I see on their website, it appears to be a good alternative. I'm not looking for anything special. Just something that will allow me to backup and sync my photos across devices.

Does anyone here have experience with Ente? If so, can you please tell me the pros and cons?

Why would anyone use this over Proton Mail or the gazillion alternatives if it treats people like shit.

Hi, I’m Hunter Perrin, and I made a new email service called Port87.

Gmail was a great email service back in 2006, but now it just sucks. They put ads in your inbox that look like unread emails to trick you into clicking them. To me, that means Gmail is malware.

I’ve been degoogling my life for the past 7 years, and Gmail is the last Google service I depended on. I love ProtonMail and use it too, but I developed a new way to sort email automatically, and wanted to write my own service based on it.

Port87 lets you use a tagged address like yourname-netflix@port87.com, and that automically creates a “netflix” label and puts all email to that address in it. This helps keep your email organized automatically, and protects against spam and phishing.

The database abstraction library I wrote for Port87 is called Nymph.js, and it’s open source. Also the UI library I wrote is called Svelte Material UI, and it’s open source too.

I hope you all like it, and hopefully it can help migrate away from Gmail.

The Chrome team says they're not going to pursue Web Integrity but...

it is piloting a new Android WebView Media Integrity API that’s “narrowly scoped, and only targets WebViews embedded in apps.”

They say its because the team "heard your feedback." I'm sure that's true, and I can wildly speculate that all the current anti-trust attention was a factor too.

Many said we couldn't stop it. We, like many, applied pressure, and they backed the fuck off.

We have no room for complacency now though. Google cannot be allowed to dictate web standards. Firefox needs to eat into that Chromium market share. Never forgive. Never forget.

I just discovered this amazing app! It lets you remove (or just disable) preinstalled apps like Facebook, Netflix, etc. and system apps like samsung knox apps, diagnostic, bixby, and even One UI (but you must have installed other launcher). You can't brick your device, worst case it falls into a boot loop and after 5 reboots it will factory reset.

Debloating your device will make it faster, more private and more secure (less atack surface).

Hi guys! I'm overthinking to hire ente.io services to my photos. I know that there are self hosted services but I don't have any computer to do that only. Any thoughts about ente.io?

I'm looking for applications with WebDAV support, and preferably encryption. Due to the fact that I have cloud storage with a huge free size, I got confused that's all my I can sew perfectly using the above factors and even more so if you store them in encrypted form. NextCloud storage excellent, but have disadvantages, such as the small size of the donation of disk space and the lack of encryption. I have found a number of solutions this is Davx5 as access to the cloud and Joplin the notes, photo text and attached files (it works on WebDAV + encryption. can you recommend any other android apps.,

I was trying to change my primary YouTube/Google account while still holding onto my Movies & TV purchases.

  1. You can't change the email address associated with your YouTube account or Google Play Movies & TV purchases.
  2. You can't transfer your purchases to a new Google account.
  3. There is a way to create a Google Play family account, but it's so buried and un-obvious that it takes search engine research to accidentally discover that this is an option.
  4. Once you create your family account, apparently some purchases can't be shared due to how they were paid for years ago.
  5. When you try to share many stated-as-"eligible" purchases with the family by using the toggle, it errors, and a refresh shows that it never shared. I used Firefox, Edge, no VPN, and no adblocker. Tons of attempts. Nothing. No fix.
  6. Google has no proper support channel.
  7. If you try to remove the family account and host it under the Google account that owns all the purchases in hopes that they will now work, you will discover that none of the accounts can join a family plan again for 12 fucking months.

Lesson: Don't ever buy your shit through Google Play. Put your pirate hat on.

On my android phone I have basically been using google keep to store my notes. Do yall recommend any FOSS alternatives? Preferably one that has a desktop version that can be synced.

I have been hesitant to add my card because of privacy. I particular the fact that my card is linked to my email. What is your take on it?

As every android user I try tons of apps. Mostly Foss or at least privacy friendly apps. Thought of gathering app links and categorizing them in a telegram channel. Please have a look if you want and also join the chat for app suggestions. thanks.

Hi all! I'm looking for a service where I can port my phone number, and then make and receive phone calls and SMS, all over data, not cell service. My particular use case is that I live in Germany, but I still have a US phone number, and occasionally need to receive SMSes or phone calls on that number.

I am aware that Google Voice offers this service, but as you can probably guess given that I'm here, I am unwilling to use it :). I saw JMP here: https://lemmy.world/post/1033514, but TBH, I don't think that it will give me the experience that I'm looking for, given that it seems to translate everything back to generic Jabber.

Edit: Thank you all for the suggestions! I have decided to go with VoIP.ms: I tested it today, and am working on transferring my number to them now.

So here is the issue, I use Google Drive because I am a writer who does a lot of writing. And I thought the cloud was a reliable way to store my writing, however now Google is looking through it's to train their ai. And I'm worried about that, especially since I have written a lot of questionable content, porn and the like. What if Google Now arbitrarily decides that I'm not using Google Drive properly and bans me from the Google, that's not good. What should I do and what alternatives can I use? Will these Alternatives still be around in like 10 years?

When I was looking to replace my google tools, I couldn't find an easy to to alternative Google Photos. Things that were suggested like immich or Synology or ente required some level of technical know how or dedicated hardware. I ended up buying a Synology drive but I have issues with loading images/videos (it's extremely slow).

Today I stumbled upon https://stingle.org/

I haven't used it yet, but it looks like it might be a good option for anyone wanting to degooglify, but without all the extra fuffing around.

It also has a F-Droid distro!

Pricing starts at 1gb for free or 100gb for three bucks

If anyone get's a chance, let me know if it's really that good.

Hi, all!

Aurora has mainly been rendered useless to me, since they started banning/ratelimiting a lot of the accounts in use on that platform.

I mainly stick to FOSS apps, but for instances where that isnt feasible, it was nice to be able to fall back on aurora store.

Any suggestions?
