John Lloyd hosted it, which he didn’t enjoy, with journalists Simon Hoggart and Jaci Stephen, myself and Ian. The idea was that Ian would know all the news questions and I could provide the comedy. Ian would be the intelligent one and I would be the funny one. It wasn’t the most promising start, but the BBC had already committed to a series. Producer Harry Thompson and comedian Angus Deayton wrote the scripts. Harry had a keen sense of humour. He’d say: “Here’s a joke for you. Angus doesn’t think it’s funny.” When it got a laugh, Angus would have this quizzical look on his face.

I wore a T-shirt because everybody wore suits and ties. I thought we looked like a parole board, and it needed an element of anarchy. I also wanted some rudeness. The news agenda always changes. In our history, the only stories that wouldn’t go away were Brexit, Covid and Trump. There are five people, three of whom weren’t there last week. No one is irreplaceable in show business. But we’ll keep going until the sun explodes and consumes the Earth, which will be the top story the following week.

Filming has started on series three of Tom Basden’s BBC One family sitcom Here We Go.

The series stars Jim Howick, Katherine Parkinson, Alison Steadman, Freya Parks, Jude Morgan-Collie and Tori Allen-Martin, as well as the writer himself.

The third series will continue to follow the chaotic Jessops family as mum Rachel (Parkinson) starts her new life as a therapist, Paul (Howick) is police constable trying to gain the respect of his peers and his kids, and Robin and Cherry (Basden and Allen-Martin) are busy with new baby Atlas,.

Basden, says:’"I’m so thrilled to be reunited with our cast of comedy legends to bring another round of the Jessops’ epic family misfortunes and everyday adventures back to BBC One’

Here We Go is a BBC Studios Comedy Production with Josh Cole, Will Sinclair, Tom Basden and Steven Canny as the executive producers. The commissioning editor for the BBC is Gregor Sharp.

A South Yorkshire hairdressers better known as a corner shop in a hit BBC sitcom is set to go under the hammer.

The property, in Lister Avenue, Balby, Doncaster, was used for external shots of Arkwright’s in Open All Hours, starring Ronnie Barker and Sir David Jason.

In 2008, the building, which campaigners had previously saved from demolition, went up for auction but failed to meet its reserve price.

It is now listed for bidding once again from 15 October, with a guide price of £150,000.

As noted at the get go it’s a difficult show to describe, rarely do you get to go to a comedy special that features a viewing of an episode of a TV show, a quiz, some stand up, some comedy songs, and not one but two separate audience participation contests. Yet it somehow works. Rooney keeps the audience on side for the whole set, with his affable personality and a sense of humour reminiscent of the Father Ted era he keeps the crowd laughing along and joining in; he’s got great stage presence and a very pleasant sounding guitar. The tinge of self-deprecation to the humour is spot on and it’s difficult to pick fault in the show, whatever the show is! At two hours with a 15 minute interval it really flies; the pacing is solid, as is the writing and the tone, the songs are clever and funny, and the energy level is consistent.
