MODERATOR OF

When Tamera Hutcherson was arrested on January 8 in Dallas, she says, she was ordered by a woman officer to remove her hijab and lift up her shirt with the instruction: “Lift up your top like it’s Girls Gone Wild.” When she did, her waist beads — worn as part of a deeply-held spiritual belief — were revealed, and the officer allowed her to continue wearing them.

But then, she says in a new lawsuit, she was escorted to take a mugshot. Another officer, a man, ordered her to remove her hijab again, this time in view of both men officers and inmates. She tried to explain that she wore her hijab — a head covering — for religious reasons but was ignored. Hutcherson eventually complied but was shaking and crying so violently that the photograph had to be taken three times just to capture an in-focus image.

Hutcherson was arrested alongside two other women wearing hijabs that day — Donia El-Hussain and Nidaa Lafi — after participating in a protest demanding that the Biden administration call for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. The three women have filed a civil lawsuit against Dallas County, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and the individual officers involved, saying their religious garments were unlawfully removed for mugshot photos. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Huma Yasin, the lawyer representing El-Hussain, Hutcherson and Lafi, said she hopes this legal action prompts policy changes.

The once-beloved children’s author is working herself up over Scotland’s new bias law.

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has jumped to defend J.K. Rowling, who is once again using her one wild and precious life to post obsessively about transgender women instead of doing literally anything else with her hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Harry Potter author took to X, formerly Twitter, on April 1 to share her thoughts on Scotland’s new Hate Crime Act, which went into effect the same day. The law criminalizes “stirring up hatred” related to age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, trans identity, or being intersex, as the BBC reported. “Stirring up hatred” is further defined as communicating or behaving in a way “that a reasonable person would consider to be threatening or abusive” against a protected group. The offense is punishable by imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both.

In response to the legislation, Rowling posted a long thread naming several prominent trans women in the U.K., including Mridul Wadhwa, the CEO of the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, and activist Munroe Bergdorf. Since it was April Fool’s day, Rowling decided to commemorate it by sarcastically affirming the womanhood of all the people she named in her thread. In the same breath that she said that a convicted child predator was “rightly sent to a women’s prison,” she also called out a number of trans women making anodyne comments about inclusion, seemingly implying that trans identity is inherently predatory.

Nazi Town, USA (piped.video)

In February 1939, more than 20,000 Americans filled Madison Square Garden for an event billed as a “Pro-American Rally.” Images of George Washington hung alongside swastikas, underlining the organizers' belief that Nazism was entirely consistent with American ideals.

NAZI TOWN, USA tells the largely unknown story of the German American Bund, an organization of Nazi sympathizers on American soil.

The death of Laken Riley, who Trump called “an American daughter,” is at the center of right-wing immigration rhetoric.

Republicans who are pushing for more restrictive immigration policy ahead of a pivotal election year continue to lean on an old strategy in their appeal to voters: broadly framing immigrant men as dangerous next to imagery of young White women victims.

In 2015 it was Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old woman who was fatally shot on a San Francisco pier. A year later, Sarah Root, a 21-year-old Iowa woman, was killed in a crash involving a drunk driver. In 2018, 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts was killed while jogging in her rural Iowa hometown. Now, it’s Laken Riley, a Georgia college student killed last month while also jogging.

All were White women, and their deaths, linked to immigrant men, became flash points in Republicans’ push for hard-line immigration policies. Led by Donald Trump, the party is using these deaths to call for policies like mass arrests, detention camps and militarized deportations, and pairing that with violent anti-immigrant language.

The rhetoric — which recalls the nation’s long history of racist attacks against men of color by casting them as threats to White women — also threatens the safety of immigrants, advocates say.

Deadly incident is the third fatal English Channel crossing attempt this year.

A seven-year-old girl has drowned after a small boat carrying 16 people trying to get to the United Kingdom capsized in northern France, according to French authorities.

The boat overturned on Sunday after the passengers boarded it in the Aa Canal, several kilometres from the waterway’s opening into the English Channel, the prefecture in France’s Nord department said.

Firefighters and policemen rushed to the scene after a witness raised an alarm.

The local authority said in a statement that the vehicle “was not appropriately sized to carry so many people”.

It said that the “apparently stolen” boat was carrying the girl’s parents, who were travelling with three more of their children. Another couple, two men and six young children were also on the boat, and all of them have been taken to hospital in Dunkirk.

This is the third fatal crossing attempt this year. In January, five people including a 14-year-old Syrian boy were killed as they tried to board a boat south of the port city of Calais in freezing temperatures.

A man wanted just two slices of cheese on his sandwich, so when his wife used three slices in his grilled cheese sandwich, he became irate.

Angered at the sight of all the extra cheesiness, James DePaola became agitated and violent, yelling at the woman, Michele DePaola. According to WSB-TV, DePaola then ripped the landline out of the wall so his wife couldn’t call the police and reportedly screamed at her intensely. The couple’s 12-year old daughter who witnessed the incident called the police to the scene, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

James DePaola was charged with obstruction of a 911 call and criminal trespass/damage to property over what the police now refer to as “the grilled cheese incident”. DePaola has a history of “abusive behavior,” and was often “excessively critical and controlling of day to day things in life” like sandwiches, apparently.

The Bengal famine of 1943 killed more than three million people in eastern India. It was one of the worst losses of civilian life on the Allied side in World War Two.

There is no memorial, museum, or even a plaque, anywhere in the world to the people who died. However, a few survivors remain, and one man is determined to gather their stories before it is too late.

'Hunger stalked us'

"Many people sold their boys and girls for a little rice. Many wives and young women ran off, hand-in-hand with men they knew or didn't know."

Bijoykrishna Tripathi is describing the desperate measures people took to find food during the Bengal famine.

He is not sure of his exact age, but his voter card says he is 112. Bijoykrishna is one of the last people to remember the disaster.

He talks faintly and slowly about growing up in Midnapore, a district in Bengal. Rice was the staple food, and he remembers its price rising "by leaps and bounds" in the summer of 1942.

McDonald’s Israel announced in October that it would be donating thousands of meals to members of the Israeli army and state security forces.

Now a photo posted by an Israeli soldier has emerged showing the fast food chain’s products in an Israeli tank in Gaza.

In the picture, a soldier is leaning over a McDonald’s bag with a rifle lying right next to it. Shells are stacked up around it.

“McDonald’s in the heart of al-Rimal, and oh, I hope the anti-Semites won’t see,” wrote Hanania Ben Shimon, the 23-year-old Israeli reservist who posted the photo on Facebook in December.

Al-Rimal, once an elegant and bustling neighborhood of Gaza City, has been reduced to ruins by Ben Shimon and his comrades.

Another picture Ben Shimon posted the month prior appears to show the same setting. This time the face of the soldier leaning over the McDonald’s bag is visible.

Ben Shimon captioned that picture, “And thanks to McDonald’s branch of Issa Hospital for fast delivery to Gaza, the courier deserves a raise in salary.”

It is unclear if this is meant to be a joke. There is no hospital of that name in Gaza or Israel, and fast food delivery would obviously not be possible to Gaza, unless it was part of an organized effort to pamper the soldiers as they carry out their gruesome task of destroying Gaza and murdering its inhabitants.

Ben Shimon, who lives in a colonial settlement in the occupied West Bank, returned from his deployment in Gaza several weeks ago. Last week he was injured when three Palestinians opened fire on cars near his home settlement of Maaleh Adumim, east of Jerusalem.

Ben Shimon is being treated as a hero for leaping out of his car and killing one of the Palestinians. Another was also killed, while the third was injured and taken captive by Israeli occupation forces.

you managed so thoroughly to miss the point I was making, I'm impressed

It's a bit of a beleaguered point, but it's very telling that this will assuredly get almost no coverage on big news networks like abc, cbs, fox, etc. and virtually no coverage in the larger papers like the NYT, sure the press agencies like Reuters and the AP will cover it and then redistributors like your source will publish this, but little thought among the media class/commentariet will be given to the man who decided there was so little hope of being able to do anything through legal/electoral means to stop a genocide that he could no longer stand idly by and had to do something to protest the sheer inhumanity of what's going on. Barely anyone probably still remembers the person who did the same thing and died in 2022 on earth day protesting inaction on climate change/destruction, that story was absolutely buried. I don't support any kind of self harm, but doing something as drastic as this requires a pretty compelling reason, most people remember Tibetan monks doing the same thing, but the same importance was not extended to that person in 2022 and will almost definitely not be extended to this person now. I may end up being wrong, but I expect this to be out of the news cycle/discourse in days at most.

The Mexican government is seeking billions of dollars in damages for arms suppliers' role in cross-border gun trafficking.

The government of Mexico is suing U.S. gun-makers for their role in facilitating cross-border gun trafficking that has supercharged violent crime in Mexico.

The lawsuit seeks US$10 billion in damages and a court order to force the companies named in the lawsuit – including Smith & Wesson, Colt, Glock, Beretta and Ruger – to change the way they do business. In January, a federal appeals court in Boston decided that the industry’s immunity shield, which so far has protected gun-makers from civil liability, does not apply to Mexico’s lawsuit.

As a legal scholar who has analyzed lawsuits against the gun industry for more than 25 years, I believe this decision to allow Mexico’s lawsuit to proceed could be a game changer. To understand why, let’s begin with some background about the federal law that protects the gun industry from civil lawsuits.

The chief medical officer for the Customs and Border Protection agency repeatedly asked staff members to order fentanyl lollipops for him to take on a helicopter mission to the United Nations in New York City in Sept. 2023, according to a whistleblower report by the Government Accountability Project.

The report was shared with Congress on Friday morning, and stated that Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alexander Eastman allegedly "spent copious hours of his and Office of the Chief Medical Officer staff time directing the OCMO staff to urgently help him procure fentanyl lollipops, a Schedule II narcotic, so that he could bring them on the CBP Air and Marine Operations helicopter on which he would be a passenger in New York City."

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid and painkiller driving the overdose crisis in the United States. Fentanyl lollipops are an oral version of the drug, and are used to treat pain, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. Chief among the Customs and Border Protection's duties as a federal agency is stopping the flow of illicit drugs, including fentanyl, into the United States over international borders.

When asked why he would need fentanyl lollipops to travel to the United Nations' General Assembly meeting, Eastman allegedly argued that the lollipops would be necessary for pain management in case of an emergency, and were "necessary" in case a CBP operator was injured, or if the Air and Marine Operations team encountered a "patient in need."

Over half a dozen CBP employees were involved in the "urgent" requests to purchase the fentanyl lollipops, the whistleblowers said, with senior leadership in the office reporting concerns about the process in emails. Eastman's attempts to order the lollipops were unsuccessful because there was not funding available, the whistleblowers said.

This month, incumbent Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele seemed poised to easily win reelection and sweep the legislature with his New Ideas party. But when his legislative supermajority appeared in doubt, Bukele and his supporters resorted to outright fraud.

F | ebruary 4 was supposed to be Nayib Bukele’s coronation day. Having successfully rigged the electoral system in his favor, suppressed the political opposition, and won over much of the population through an apparent victory over El Salvador’s notorious criminal gangs, the millennial millionaire and publicist president was poised to easily secure a second term — constitutional prohibitions on reelection be damned — and sweep the legislature with his New Ideas (NI) party.

By most accounts, that’s exactly what happened. A little under 53 percent of Salvadorans went to the polls that Sunday, and the vast majority of them voted for Bukele. Most of those voters — though not, it appears, as many as the president had hoped — also cast ballots for NI legislators.

But something went wrong. As poll workers began to input their tallies, the platform for uploading preliminary results on election night crashed. With only 70 percent of presidential votes and 5 percent of legislative results registered, the national elections board (the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, or TSE) declared the preliminary count a failure.

In the contentious recount that followed, credible allegations of fraud mounted. Bukele and his party appeared to be stealing an election that, by most measures, they had already won.

Republicans in Florida’s legislature don’t think enough is being done to indoctrinate children in the Sunshine State against the dangers of communism. Frankly, it’s a little heartening that they’re this worried about a socialist resurgence. ---] F | lorida has one of the worst literacy rates in the United States. A full 23.7 percent of Floridians have low literacy skills, the eighth worst state in the country.

You might think that would top the list of concerns of legislators trying to figure out how to improve the education system in the Sunshine State. You certainly wouldn’t think that they would spend their time and resources worrying about Florida schoolchildren becoming communists.

This is a state, after all, where ultraconservative governor Ron DeSantis would probably win again if he were allowed to run for a third term. Former president Donald Trump won Florida in 2016 and 2020 and he’ll probably win the state again in 2024. Even in comparatively liberal Miami-Dade County — which went for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020 — there are large and vocal communities of ferociously anti-communist émigrés from countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Surely Florida is among the states where a sudden outbreak of Marxism-Leninism is the least likely.

And yet, a bill advancing through the Florida state legislature would create a “Communism Task Force” in the state’s department of education to ensure that students were being taught about a long list of subjects starting with “history of Communism in the United States and domestic Communist movements, including their histories and tactics,” “atrocities committed in foreign countries under the guidance of Communism,” and the “philosophy and lineages of Communist thought.”

The original wording included a reference to “cultural Marxism” as part of the “philosophy and lineages of Communist thought.” This is a poorly defined right-wing bugbear, often associated with conspiracy theories about the Frankfurt School and the idea that insidious commies are engaged in a “long march through the institutions” of Western societies. In practice, it’s mostly a way of nonsensically associating “wokeness” (i.e., mainstream liberal identity politics) with Marxism (a very specific way of understanding and critiquing economic inequality). Even in Ron DeSantis’s Florida, though, quite so openly inserting right-wing culture-war talking points in public school curricula seems to be a bridge too far. The bill was amended to remove the phrase.

The bill includes instructions that lessons on these mandated topics are to be “age appropriate and developmentally appropriate” — so kindergartners won’t be hearing about Joseph Stalin’s purges. But even with this caveat, it’s overwhelmingly clear that the goal is propaganda rather than genuine education about twentieth-century history.

For example, as Julie Meadows-Keefe of the group Florida Moms for Accurate Education points out, the bill doesn’t require that students be taught about “the McCarthy era in the United States of America.” That’s a good point. Given that it does require that the “history and tactics” of “domestic Communist movements” be taught, one would think that the disturbing retreat from the First Amendment that took place as a response to those movements would be a relevant part of the history.

An even bigger omission is that there’s no requirement that Florida schools teach their students about “atrocities committed in foreign countries” in the name of anti-communism. That’s not a short list. Adolf Hitler’s seizure of absolute power in Germany, for example, was justified by fear of communist revolution after the Reichstag was (allegedly) burned down by a Dutch communist. A famous quote from German pastor Martin Niemöller, prominently displayed in the US Holocaust Museum, starts with the lines:
