Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

P has one of its 4 stats dedicated just to increasing the power of throwing random bullshit. I can't understand how people would think that isn't a valid play style. That people do it is slightly more interesting than any weapon built using the jackhammer spear thing

I never played a fromsoft game until elden ring. I hardly really knew anything about them. I only really knew that you fight big bosses and that it's hard. After playing for a while and not knowing where to go or what to do next, i looked up some forums and Ho-Ly shit. People who are into these games are the most obnoxious bunch of gamers i have ever seen. If you don't play naked and with the worst weapon of the game, you're basically not even playing. They live with their own made up rules because that's what they see their favourite YouTubers doing, who play that game for a living.

Pretty much. This is my favorite genre/game developer but it has 100% one of the most toxic fan bases. But I guess that helped cement for me that the game is it at its best when I'm not engaging with it in a way that involves letting people tell me how I should play. Also it gave me motivation to finally start invading people and do unspeakable things to people who play naked or follow build guides.

Hope you get to enjoy your playthrough though. There's so much more to these than just difficulty and I envy you getting to see it all for the first time

If someone wants to make the game harder for themselves, cool. They can have fun bragging about their challenge runs.

But the trophies speak for themselves.

I used the tools the game gave me and still struggled with Romeo because I used up every single instant repair thingy in the whole game and they aren't something you can farm or buy, afaik, so I kept getting fucked in the second phase becsuse at no point in his attack patterns does he give you any time to use the grindstone 😬

I ended up respeccing to use a weapon that was more durable just for that one dude after using the same build the whole rest of the game.

No matter how you have beaten the boss as long as you have done it in a legal way.

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't think killing people is legal

Depends on if you're a cop

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 1 points 17 hours ago

Being a cop shouldn't be legal

:-/

If the most compelling case for your position is that it's not illegal...

There's definitely elegant and cheesy ways to win a game.

In a souls game a win is a win. Unless you're outright cheating anything goes. You wanna poison a boss for ten minutes, go ahead. And when he still nails you at deaths door and make you repeat the process, even better

People be like "it needs an easy mode" but the easy mode is there if you want it

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean yeah but also no, I'm not the target audience for an easy mode but I can imagine that they don't want to run out of their consumables and throwables and have to go grind for half an hour to have another boss attempt just so they can continue with this "easy mode"

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

"Easy mode" doesn't even make use of consumables. You just use the strongest, fastest weapon and overlevel your stats so you can just spam 1 button the whole time and win.

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Fellas is it easy mode to use a strong weapon and engage with levelling up

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's so easy a caveman can do it!

Unga bunga!

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 3 points 2 days ago

Personally I'm of the opinion that playing a game someone else made is easy mode. Especially if you're using hardware someone else made.

I think it's a tad more nuanced but I get the sentiment
