True denim doesn't stretch so tight was very uncomfortable. Fashion wanted tight jeans so they added spandex to the denim weave. Durability was sacrificed for butt-hugging.

[–] SpicyTaint@lemmy.world 56 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would sacrifice anything for some butt-hugging. 😭

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Does that mean you'll go to the gym; stop eating so much junk food; take showers every day; keep your abode clean; go out of the house and talk to people in real life?

I do everything except the last thing. People are scary IRL.

Internet pro tip: Watch this video. Becoming socially curious is a game-changer for introverts.

Dr. Smithyman. The name sounds like a character from YA novel.

He's got a lot of good content.

The last is kinda the point of the prior actions.

Professional help is given by people though

ChatGPT told me it's selfish of my friends to not want me to kill myself!

When it first came out, "Her" was edgy science fiction.

Now it's a Hallmark movie.

When I was younger if you had holes in your jeans you weren’t cool, you were poor.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Wrangler still makes cheap, basic jeans out of thicker denim.

Anyone else think $50 is a lot for a pair of 501s?

I have Levi's that are about 25 years old that I still wear. (Of course, I went through a few years when I was too fat to wear them, so they just hung in the closet till I lost the weight. But, they are that old, and I do wear them now.)

Used to be decent, anyways. Now the price has more than doubled in the last year, and it broke after a couple months for me. I then ordered a second pair and the same thing happened. Maybe there's a specific variant, or they sell different qualities to different markets?

[–] LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I vaguely remember reading about a 501 collectors market and how vintage Levis went for a pretty penny. Im guessing it wasn't 1995 vintage, though.
Looks longingly into closet

When I was a teenager and used to listen to nu metal we used to be able to use my jeans as a sleeping bag - me in one leg and my girlfriend in the other leg.

[–] fu@libranet.de 3 points 2 days ago

@oeuf @Stamets this I have to see.

[–] fascicle@leminal.space 15 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Tractor supply has some of the best rated durable jeans, and they're some of the cheapest

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah but then you're supporting insurrectionists and pedophiles.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yes, but they have a great January 6th sale: Boys pants half off!

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Too bad they are a MAGA company

[–] fascicle@leminal.space 7 points 2 days ago

Oh dang I didnt know that

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Costco has a more limited selection but still cheap and durable. I’ve got a couple pairs that are older than my kids.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Curious if that’s still true since you presumably bought those jeans many years ago. I only recently got Kirkland jeans and I’m skeptical they’ll last.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

As my weight went up and down I had to buy more over the years and they seem just as good now as they were.

And I used them hard. Farm work, car repairs, construction, etc. and they just got better with age.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 days ago

Those jeans are not from 100 years ago

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

Ugh, so hard to find a decent pair of boot cut jeans that aren't as thin as high tech hiking pants and are comfortable.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I get my clothes from the thrift store. Sadly, even that's getting more expensive. Used to be could get jeans for $5 and now it's more like $20

Levis still makes those jeans, but they're really expensive.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

And they suck

[–] y0kai@anarchist.nexus 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Did they go up recently? I've been getting 501s for like $50 all my life, but haven't had to buy any in like 10 years because they last forever.

[–] rImITywR@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, everything has gotten more expensive over the last 10 years, in case you haven't noticed.

I think he is talking about their high end lines with tougher denim

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Which lines are those? I’d be willing to drop some money if they were to last longer.

[–] Kalothar@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

So I think you’re gonna want to go with Levi premium, this is only available online or in an actual Levi outlet stores.

The numbers like 501, 511 or whatever never indicate quality and only indicate design specifications

Levi Strauss is what you usually find in something like Walmart stores, and is partially polyester. Levi original is the next step and that’s at like Macy’s and other department stores. Levi’s shrink to fit is raw denim, but hard to find nowadays most likely at an Levi outlet as well. $50-$100

Premium is right above the middleground, better quality denim and sewing work.

Then there is Levi’a Made and Crafted / Levi Japan / Blue Tab(high quality denim and uses the originally indigo dye for the jeans) about $300+

Lastly Vintage is recreated versions of their ancient jeans, similar in quality to Levi Japan.

weird shapes

There's a particular style of pants I've seen in more recent years that always gives the impression that the person wearing them has a loaded diaper underneath due to how the crotch seam hangs way below the actual crotch.

[–] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 day ago

Löded Diper

[–] apftwb@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Anyone got any recommendations for jeans with a button fly? (That isn't the Levi 501 because it doesn't fit me well)

[–] ODGreen@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Naked and Famous denim. Lots of different cuts available.

When I was in 7th or 8th grade, I put a pair of Levi's silver tab jeans in the shopping cart with my mom, didn't know the price. Got up front to checkout and they were around $45. My eyes almost popped out of my head, I don't remember spending that kind of money on clothes. Looked at my mom, she said to get them reluctantly. I felt so bad, I made those pants last for almost 10 years, all through highschool before they turned in my housework/car repair pants.

You can still get decent levis for $50 or so, but quality has definitely gone down a bit.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I’m not saying to do the thing where you only put them in the freezer like a lunatic, but washing them much and wrong doesn’t help.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

/Shrug

The Perfect Jeans are great.

[–] y0kai@anarchist.nexus 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Wait but Levis still exist! I'm wearing them. Shit is this a dream? Chat, am I real?

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Just not the same quality that they used to be

[–] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Levis makes a huge range of quality. The stuff at shopping mall department stores is crap. But the made-in-Mexico shrink-to-fit 501s you can find at hardware stores are phenomenal. And they are still only like US$50.

It's getting harder to get a nice pair of non-streach jeans. And the streach ones are shit IMO
