That's great, but we shouldn't have to rely on the graciousness of a football player to find justice.

Not to suggest that the federal government had been doing an infallible job in helping with justice, but this is going to be the only way most people receive justice as long as Project 2025 associates are in office. (Sadly we also have to keep in mind even if an autopsy reveals foul play, actual justice is still an uphill battle).

The department of Justice only exists now to further the agenda, and to continue to help roll back all protections of civil rights and liberties.

Who should we rely on? Justice is fought for and won, never given away.

The justice system, who we as citizens pay for probably

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s a judicial system, not a justice system. It serves those in power by preserving law and order.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

They are paid from your taxes, they should serve you.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

They’re there to throw you in jail if you don’t pay your taxes.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

That's all well and good, but it doesn't change actual reality.

Your comment makes you sound like a five year old learning the way people work for the first time.

[–] DarthFreyr@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I believe that this is the same point: this is not a case of justice being won, and we should still fight for the right thing to be done in the first place (presumably just being paid for as part of a criminal investigation, among a broader context).

The original headline doesn't mention that he was hanging from a tree, which is bullshit. It changes what people understand from what happened. Could it have been suicide? Maybe, but I doubt it.

This is from 2020

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What was the original headline?

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago

It took me a second to see why you were confused. I editorialized it in another community, but it's the one linked:

Police say autopsy confirms suicide after Black student found hanged on Mississippi college campus

[–] BananaTrifleViolin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I dunno, it's good it wasn't in the headline? It'd have been clickbait - the article makes it clear this is suspected suicide but that the police / FBI are keeping open minds because of the obvious connotations.

Suicide by hanging is unfortunately a common method taken by young men. The lack of any other signs makes foul play unlikely - without going into too much detail, unless he was drugged there would be signs of a struggle or injuries related to being restrained if it had been foul play. It sounds like there weren't obvious signs of either and the toxicology results are awaited.

the article makes it clear this is suspected suicide but that the police / FBI are keeping open minds because of the obvious connotations.

Just so you know, the cops have said quite specifically they don't think it was anything but suicide.

Its also a heavily racist area and no one should trust cops in the first place, making for a bad combo. Thats why the family will want an autopsy from someone independent of the police.

I'd like to know where on the property this tree is. Was this in some quiet corner where he's unlikely to be interrupted, or out in front of the building where the public is going to see it?

Seems to be there. At night, you could probably either hang yourself or someone else and not be noticed or interrupted. I don't think it really signifies either way.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Black men in the south thinking of suicide don’t hang themselves from trees.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 46 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What amazes me most about this article is that the US justice system so broken that such a foundation has a reason to exist.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well at least youre not reading this on /c/upliftingnews as if anything about this situation is good. I always found articles like this (or "Billionaire hands out free sack lunches to starving orphans") posted there to be quite infuriating.

"World agrees that human with most of the resources should keep most of the resources, just in case that human wants to give them some of their resources at some point."

Thank you Kaepernick.
