Kiinnostus = interest (noun). A noun that refers to the feeling of interest or curiosity someone has.

Minulla on kiinnostus historiaan. = I have an interest in history.

Mielenkiintoinen = interesting (adjective). An adjective used to describe something that causes interest.

*Kuulostaa mielenkiintoiselta! = Sounds interesting! *

You got mielenkiintoinen right. For the other one, you can sometimes talk about someone's interest in something, but your example is awkward, though not necessarily incorrect.

I'd use Olen kiinnostunut historiasta / I'm interested from history.
