Other articles say the device wasn't functional and "hoax weapons of mass destruction" (what the fuck does that mean?) were found at their home.

But this information is coming from the FBI, and they already had a huge problem with undercover agents pushing for this type of stuff and building unfunctionable explosives to charge the people who were never doing anything to begin with.
Especially in this climate with the people trump has running the FBI ...
It's not just nativity, it's willfully ignorance to just blindly believe and repeat claims made by the US government.
No rational person is going to take Trump's government at their word
