What happens in UK is so much sadder because the left party is in power (at least 'the left' one of the two). Makes me feel hopeless, like all paths lead to totalitarianism.

yes I'm very upset over text only smut wdym

Labour has been openly rightist since the 80s. There are not many places remaining for leftists in the English speaking world.

I heard Aussie Labor is a lot better but idk

They’re far more centrist now than they used to be and have shown no interest in restoring Unions, strengthening the right to protest, and have been approving new coal mines.

Also they agreed to continue AUKUS which is just bending over for the yanks.

better only by comparison, lol they have their own social media ID bill that will eventually be expanded imo

Same sort of weird things starting to happen too in Canada with β€œliberal” Carney.

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don’t think anyone thinks of Carney as actually left wing. He’s a banker.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

He dis not run under left wing, he ran as a Liberal. He is showing that he is not a liberal so far.

Controled opposition... About time people figured that their team ain't actually on their side lol

Peasants got to go into hard opposition, engaging in assymetric tactics and decentralization.

all paths can lead to totalitarianism.

depend on what flavor you want though. I'm partial to leftist totalitarian rule, because I would rather everyone be accepted than only "them" be accepted.

I think I'd rather let assholes be assholes than to let governments have the power to legislate undesirable behaviour (beyond basic violence and shit).

Just can't see it creating a dignifying world no matter how good your intentions and planning are.

you're not wrong, but how can we combat conservative fascism unless we use socialist fascism?

unless we use the anarchist method of chaos and violence until unity, but that could take decades and billions of lives.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Progressivism cannot be authoritarian in my head, that's something else I'm not willing to be a part of.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Imagine a society that imprisons citizens because they refuse to serve homosexuals, or uses derogatory terms towards people of color.

Imagine a society that forcibly taxes the wealthy to ensure the poorest can be cared for.

Imagine a society that takes over a company because they are mistreating workers.

that's progressive authoritarianism, that's socialism.

I would much rather prefer it to the current brand of fascism growing in the US today.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Imprisoning people for bigotry sounds kinda horrid. Committee of decrepit old farts deciding which slur puts you away for how many years? no thank you

The rest is normal imo, most people would not call taxes and labor rights authoritarian.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

the wealthy did, that's how we got here.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

we as a species need to move past ownership, profit motive, and false scarcity or were going to keep killing eachother over nothing

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 months ago

Labour have always been pretty authoritarian. I didn't vote for this shit.
