Upwards of 70,000 people were once detained in al-Hol, another larger camp in the northeast holding the families. In 2023, more than 52,000 people – mostly Syrians and Iraqis – were held in al-Hol and Roj, including an estimated 12,000 foreign nationals.

She found that conditions met “the threshold for torture under international law”. The violence women and children face now, she told Al Jazeera, is worse.

“It is utterly unacceptable that women and children who have never been convicted of any crimes, who have never been subject to any legal process, are being detained in this way,” she said.

There is no legal basis for their arbitrary detention, she said, adding that the remedy is release.

Iranian nationalists and monarchists have now launched a frontal attack on Jîna Amini's father after he shared a poem in Kurdish honoring the anniversary, accompanied by a Kurdish flag. First, his Instagram profile was temporarily suspended due to mass reporting, but it is now back up after Meta probably reviewed the post and determined that it did not violate the platform's rules.

From these circles, deeply fascist, Shia-Islamist, and dictatorial narratives are pouring forth, attempting to force Kurds back into the Iranian fold and encapsulate them under the historical "Lion, Sun, and Islamic Sword" flag. While the reality for the Kurdish people is entirely different, they are trying to construct a false narrative of the "good Kurd" as a loyal subdivision of the Iranian national identity. But the reality is that the Kurdish nation, as an independent entity, rejects both this forced Iranian national identity and the symbolism behind the "Lion, Sun, and Islamic Sword", and has done so for over a hundred years.

Instead of trying to speak for us or dictate our identity on behalf of a people that many of you looked down upon and mocked before 2022, you should at least read @RojinMukriyan's research on what Jin-Jiyan-Azadî actually means for Rojhelati Kurds, including how the national, Iranian oppression of the Kurds and the Kurdish nation is an inseparable part of the very core of Jin-Jiyan-Azadî.

This was proven crystal clear in practice through the massive mobilization, organization, and activism that once again shut down all of Kurdistan in solidarity with the anniversary of Jîna. It stood as an inescapable signal to all of them out there that this deep, uncompromising, and completely unique resistance struggle has its permanent anchor among the population in Kurdistan and within the Kurdish parties. It became painfully clear to those who deliberately renamed Jîna to "Mahsa" and who attempted to distort and "Persianize" both Jin-Jiyan-Azadî and its deep roots in Kurdistan.

The Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) (@pjakmediacenter) says that Sirwan Habibi (Sîrwan Hebîbî), one of its members, was arrested in Kamyaran, eastern Kurdistan, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and that there is still no information about his whereabouts or health condition.

According to a statement issued by PJAK, Habibi was ambushed by forces linked to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence. The party says he was beaten during the arrest and then taken to an unknown location.

PJAK also stated that Habibi was not carrying any weapon at the time of his arrest and had travelled to Kamyaran to carry out organizational work.

The party expressed serious concern for his safety and called on civil society activists, human rights organizations, and the public in Iran and abroad to urgently follow his case and press for information about his condition and place of detention.
